All family and friends are welcome to join us for the visitation (viewing) of Yen-Hsu Chen on Sunday, June 1 from 2:00-4:00 PM.
Yen-Hsu Chen, a dedicated civil engineer and cherished member of his family, passed away on May 11, 2025, at the age of 72. He grew up in Taiwan for much of his childhood until moving to São Paulo, Brazil with his family in his high school years. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of São Paulo before furthering his education with a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from Colorado State University, Fort Collins.
Yen-Hsu dedicated 45 years of his professional life to the field of civil engineering, contributing his expertise first at Simons Li & Associates, and later at Tetra Tech. Known for his great attention to detail, he was an avid learner, problem solver, and DIYer, always willing to provide assistance to friends and colleagues, whether through critical thinking or manual labor.
His personal life reflected the same dedication that characterized his professional career. Yen-Hsu was not only a father, but a teacher and friend to his children, Nicole and Kyle. He will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for his generosity and warmth towards family and friends. His hobbies included taking photographs, traveling to national parks, and embarking on road trips, activities that enriched his life and allowed him to share beautiful experiences with his loved ones.
On the morning of May 10, 2025, while enjoying one of his daily walks along the San Diego Creek bike trail, Yen-Hsu was struck from behind by a bicyclist and hit his head. As a result, he suffered a massive brain bleed and fell unconscious by the time emergency medical services arrived. Despite efforts to save his life at the hospital, he was confirmed brain dead after two CT scans, an EEG, and a cerebral angiogram. The family made the difficult decision to end life support, and he passed away peacefully on May 11 at 1:22 PM.
Yen-Hsu is survived by his devoted wife, Nancy; his children, Nicole and Kyle; his mother, Kuei Chih Liao, who is 98 years old; and three sisters. He was preceded in death by his father, Jui Cheng Chen, who lived to be 100 years old.
Yen-Hsu Chen leaves behind a legacy of kindness, professionalism, and cherished memories in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be profoundly missed.
