William LeRoy Hiles was born in Cherokee, Iowa to Helen Jean (Peterson) Hiles and Jacob Franklin Hiles on December 30th, 1955. Bill, as he was known to his family and friends, grew up in Meriden, Iowa until he was 4 when his family moved to Merrill, Iowa. Bill attended elementary school in both Merrill and Le Mars and junior and senior high school at Le Mars Community Schools, graduating in 1974.
He worked as an asphalt truck driver for 2 years before joining the U.S. Navy, while serving he gain the rank of Petty Officer and served as a Para Rescue Specialist abroad a U.S. destroyer. After mustering out of the Navy, he worked several jobs in Southern California and Colorado. When his sister, Mary, passed away, he returned to Le Mars to be with and help his mother. He worked with Earl Drayer at the Le Mars airport and during this time decided to continue his education and attended Westmar University graduating in 1994 with a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science. While studying he worked evenings a KLEM radio station. In 1995, he moved back to Southern California and worked as golf sales representative. After a decade working as an LVN, Bill proceeded to go back into truck driving until his passing.
On April 12th, 1997, Bill married the love of his life, Shirley Olano. They are the proud parents of two lovely daughters, Mia Janelle Newman (Jason) of Chiba, Japan and Jillian Joy Hiles of San Francisco, California. Bill was proceeded in death by the brother Charles Jacob Hiles, his sister Mary Elizabeth Barry, his mother in law, Juana Olano, his sisters in law, Ellen and Riza and Nandy, and one brother-in-law Maynard. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Shirley, his two daughters, Mia (Jason) and Jillian, his brother Frank (Cheryl) Hiles and sister Susan (Jim) Becker both of Le Mars, Iowa, his sister/brother's in law, Nilda (Maynard), Juanita (Reynaldo), Malou (Rolando), Ting (Dan), Andres Jr. (Ellen), Boy Chatto (Riza) and his neices and nephews.
