Wilda Steiner, 96, formerly of West Milton, Ohio, passed away on November 4th, 2020, while in hospice in Palm Springs, California, her home since 1980.
She was born Wilda Mae Hurley on July 17th, 1924, in West Milton, Ohio, to William Henry and Dot Adelaide Boyd Hurley.
Wilda was first known in West Milton for her personality as a high school cheerleader and as a bank teller at the Citizens National Bank.
She graduated Milton-Union High School in 1942, joined the U.S. Navy during WWII (WAVES Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service) serving in Communications within the Pentagon, Washington D.C., then earned a B.S. degree in Education from Miami University in 1966 while raising four children.
Wilda was best known in Miami and Montgomery Counties, Ohio, as an Elementary, Junior High and High School English teacher at Milton Union Schools and later as Librarian Coordinator at Northmont School District. She was active in the Eastern Star (served as Past Matron), American Legion Auxiliary (one term as President) and was a Sunday School teacher and sang in the choir as a devout member of the West Milton United Church of Christ.
In Palm Springs she was employed as a cook on the estate of Darryl Zanuck and later Wilda worked as a bank teller at Bank of America, cosmetic sales at Bullock's Department Store and as a clothing salesperson at George Weild's Fashion Store.
In retirement she enjoyed traveling the U.S. and Canada with her husband in their camper in the summer months, volunteering as a guide at state parks as well as taking cruises abroad.
Mom loved her family and was an avid scheduler and documentarian of events and travels as well as being hostess and cook.
During their years in a retirement community she and her husband Dick enjoyed hosting and entertaining their neighbors and friends with music and comedy.
She leaves behind her son Brent Steiner of Los Angeles; daughter Pamela (Steiner) Anderson of Ft. Mill, SC; son Kenneth Steiner (Hazel) of San Diego; daughter Colette (Steiner) Shelley (David) of Alamogordo, NM; six nieces, two nephews, eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Wilda was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Richard, brother Wayne Hurley, sister-in-law Ruth Hurley and nephew Andrew Dillon.
