It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Virginia Reyes Cura on December 19, 2024, at the age of 91.
Virginia was born on May 4,1933 in Manila, Philippines. Her parents were the late Rosario Santa Maria and Ricardo Reyes.
Virgie, as she was fondly called, was known for her kindness, selflessness, compassion, strength, generosity, and dedication to her Faith. She touched the lives of everyone she met by her unwavering commitment to help. She dedicated her life to helping others. Whether it was giving advice to her friends and family, visiting those who were sick and lonely, she had a unique way of making the world a better place.
A very distinct attribute of Lola Mommy, as the grandchildren called her, was her sense of style and fashion. They called her a “fashionista.” She worked for Buffum’s Store, May Company, and Macy’s as a sales associate. As she said, “I don’t have any vice. I just went to the hairdresser since I was sixteen.” However, when the pandemic started, she reinvented herself and switched to wearing short wigs. She had a wide collection of wigs, hats, scarves, dresses, and shoes.
Her family was the center of her life, and she always put the needs of others before her own. She was an amazing cook, a compassionate listener, and an inspiration to those around her. Her love for music, traveling, and painting brought joy and comfort to all who shared it with her.
Mom prayed earnestly and consistently. She loved the Virgin Mary and the saints. Her favorites were the Virgin Mary, Infant Jesus, and St. Michael. When she was unable go to church with Oscar, she relied on her iPad to attend the mass and participate in the rosary crusade. She always held three item while lying in bed: her rosary, small statues of the Infant Jesus and St. Michael.
She was an extraordinary mother to Bert Cura (Joji), Oscar Cura, Daniel Cura (Sim), Marilou Cura Cambus (Charles), and Paul (Estela). Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren, Jona (Monet), Aijin (Theresa), Angelo, Cierra (Mark), Josef (Rupal), Marianne (Richard), Barbara (Joseph), Izabella, and great grandchildren, Gordon, Logan, Tricia, Alec, Raelynn, and Margeaux.
Virginia was preceded in death by her siblings, Victor, Amada, Ricardo, Cleotilde, Feliciano, and Carmen. A full day wake will be at the Forest Lawn Faith Chapel on January 4, 2024 from 9:30 AM to 8:00 PM. A mass will be celebrated at 6:00 PM. A funeral service will be held on January 6, 2024 at the Old North Church, Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles at 9:00 AM.
