Vilma R. Martinez

Vilma Ruth Angulo de Martínez died on July 4, 2019 at age 82. A Native of El Salvador, she emigrated to the United States in 1958, where she met and married Ruben R. Martinez and settled in Los Angeles. She returned to school as an adult at Los Angeles Community College and Antioch College, attaining a Master's Degree in Psychology. She worked as an administrator of senior programs at the International Institute in Boyle Heights and in Culver City. She served as a counselor at the Hollywood Sunset Community Clinic and as counselor and supervisor at the Southern California Counseling Center, eventually establishing her a private practice in the Larchmont neighborhood of Los Angeles. She had a lifelong love of poetry and published several chapbooks. She is survived by her husband Ruben and her children Ruben Jr., Rossana and John, all of Los Angeles; by her grandchildren Ruby and Lucía García-Martinez of Oakland; and her sister, Sonia, of Guatemala City.
