Valma (Val) Louise Carey, born on a sunny day on July 6, 1958, in Bellflower, California, left this world on August 10, 2024, after a courageous battle with a long illness. The beloved daughter of Harold and Mayme Brown, Val's early life was rooted in the beautiful community of Bellflower alongside her brother, Gary, and her sister, Connie. A proud graduate of Bellflower High School in 1975, she carried the spirit of love and adventure into every chapter of her life.
Val’s journey into her professional career began at the age of 18 when she entered Bellflower Pharmacy School, embarking on what would become a rewarding 35-year tenure as a pharmacy technician. Her career saw her brighten the lives of countless individuals at various Albertsons locations, with her favorite being the bustling store in Buena Park, where she not only managed prescriptions but also shared smiles and kind words that comforted many.
It was here, amidst the aisles of Albertsons in 1980, that fate stepped in when Jim Carey, a firefighter paramedic, walked into her life. Captivated by Val’s enchanting eyes, Jim’s impulsive decision to buy her a rose marked the beginning of a love story filled with affection, laughter, and a hint of serendipity. Their love blossomed quickly, leading to a delightful proposal and marriage on September 19, 1981, set against the scenic backdrop of Anaheim Hills, surrounded by the rustic charm of eucalyptus trees.
Together, Val and Jim built a life rich with adventure and joy. They moved to Garden Grove in 1982, where they welcomed their son, Kenneth, in 1983, and where Val's heart found another love—her loyal Morkie, Gizmo. Gizmo was more than a pet; she was Val's constant companion, whether sitting beside her in the car or joining her and Jim on their boat. Her presence brought additional warmth to their family, teaching them the unconditional love and joy that only a pet can provide.
Val was not only devoted to her family but also to her passions. After retiring in 2011, she channeled her creativity into becoming a licensed interior decorator. Her home in Anaheim Hills, which she and Jim purchased in 1990 and meticulously remodeled, was a testament to her elegant taste, adorned in shades of white and off-white that reflected her love for serene and inviting spaces.
An adventurer at heart, Val enjoyed sailing with Jim to their favorite getaway, Catalina Island, where Jim would dive for dinner while Val soaked up the tranquility aboard. Their shared passion for motorcycles took them on exhilarating rides to iconic landmarks and through scenic landscapes, from the storied faces of Mount Rushmore to the vibrant streets of San Francisco.
Val's zest for life extended to her hobbies of gardening, cooking, and maintaining an immaculate home, where friends and family were always welcomed with open arms and warm meals. Jim often remarked that Val was "an angel walking on this planet," a sentiment echoed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her vivacity, intelligence, and kindness radiated, touching lives and inspiring love and laughter.
Val is survived by her adoring husband, Jim, her son Kenneth, her mother Mayme, and her beloved Gizmo, who continues to miss her dearly. Val's legacy is one of love, resilience, and the beauty of everyday moments. She taught those around her to cherish connections, embrace adventure, and live with a heart full of love. Her spirit will forever be cherished and remembered as a beacon of light in the lives of many.
