Thomas was born in Los Angeles, the son of Thomas and Mable Ahlborn Potase. Tom spent his early years living in San Francisco with his mother. He graduated from Hollywood High School in Los Angeles. He earned graduate degrees in business and engineering from the University of Southern California and from the University of California at Los Angeles.
Tom was a world traveler. He loved photography and sports cars. An independent soul, Tom appreciated cats. Any kindness shown to cats or a gift to an animal shelter would be a fitting memorial to Tom.
