Palm Desert

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas Edward Callahan, lovingly known as Tom, who left this world on September 27, 2024, after a decade-long battle with cancer. Born on May 24, 1938, in Evanston, IL, Tom's journey through life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family, community, and profession.

After Tom's family made the move from Chicago to Southern California when he was 15, he finally settled in the Covina neighborhood of Charter Oak with a family of his own.

Tom devoted over 50 years of his life to the Covina Valley Unified School District, where he began as a dedicated worker and advanced to become the Director of Maintenance and Operations. Even after retiring, his passion for his work led him to continue contributing as a paid consultant for district bond projects. His commitment to education and the welfare of the students was profound and everlasting, creating a legacy that will not be forgotten.

Beyond his successful career, Tom embodied warmth and humor, always ready with a smoothly delivered dad joke or a supportive shoulder during difficult times. His presence had a way of turning any moment into a cherished memory, reminding everyone of the importance of laughter and togetherness.

In retirement, Tom found immense joy on the golf course, relishing both the game itself and the camaraderie it brought. However, nothing filled his heart more than the time spent with his beloved wife of 36 years, Karen. Together, they created a home filled with love and laughter, where family and friends were always welcome.

From Covina, to Lake Arrowhead then down to Palm Springs and Palm Desert, friends and family were invited in by a smile and warm hospitality.Tom was never happier than when surrounded by loved ones, celebrating life’s special moments and building memories that would last a lifetime. His door was open to all, reflecting the kindness and hospitality that defined him.

Thomas leaves behind a cherished family including his beloved wife, Karen; their daughter, Debra; sons Timothy, Steven, Edward and Mark; daughters-in-law Chona, Dina, and Belinda; as well as his dear brother Michael and siblings-in-law Sandy, Cheryl, Pat, and Pat's wife Evelyn. Sandy's sister Nancy accompanied her on twice yearly visits from Oregon to see Tom and Karen in Palm Desert and filled his final years with laughter and fond memories. His nieces and nephews were always remembered with affection and remained a much-recalled source of memories and love. They are: Erin, Chris, Savannah, John Jr., Cassandra, Melanie, Matthew, and Michael.

A special place in Tom's family was lovingly filled by Pat Donohoe, godmother to his children. She provided support and guidance over many years, remaining a dear friend even up to Tom's passing. Her beloved husband Wayne awaits Tom in Heaven, to welcome him to the next adventure. Their friendship was instrumental in Tom's life, and they will be loved and remembered, always.

Tom had grandchildren and great grandchildren who were a joy to him. He leaves behind his wisdom and affection to: Shannon, Kristeen, Chris (Mily,) Timothy, Brandon (Eunice,) Stephanie (Joshua,) Bradley (Jessica,) and the next generation, including Anthony, Molly, Chloe, Mackenzie, Mary Jane, Elena, and Zachary.

He joins in eternal rest his mother, Ruth Irene Callahan; father, Edward Thomas Callahan; his daughter, Janice, and brothers James and John, as well as John's beloved Maria (Millie.) Tom's daughter-in-law, Maria, and his grandson, Jonathan, will be there to welcome him to eternal life. These loved ones and their memories will forever be intertwined with Tom's life, and he will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege to know him. When we honor the life of Thomas Edward Callahan, we celebrate a man who dedicated himself fully to those around him, a friend, a father, a husband, and a neighbor who will be dearly missed and forever remembered in our hearts.

The family will be gathering for a private viewing and goodbye, but will also be organizing a celebration of Tom's life, details pending.

IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, THE FAMILY ASKS THAT YOU CONSIDER MAKING A DONATION TO THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY IN TOM'S MEMORY. THANK YOU!

"May the road rise up to meet you.

May the wind be always at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face;

the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,

may God hold you in the palm of His hand."

-An Irish Blessing
