Susan Shim Hahn

May 5, 1923 — September 15, 2022

Born in rural Chung Cheong Province, south of Seoul, Korea, in 1923. Susan's father, Shim Sang Gun, and Susan's mother, Cho Sang Sook, had 9 children. Susan was the 4th child. She had a love for music throughout her entire 101 years of life. At age six, Susan's father heard her playing an instrument, which Susan had self-taught. Her father, Shim Sang Gun, was hailed as the "Korean Beethoven" of Kayageum (a Korean instrument) and believed her natural talent to be a gift from God. Susan, known as Shim Tae Jin at the time, became her father's protege. At age 25, Susan, her father and 10 other members of a traditional Korean musical troupe, sailed to America in 1948. Susan performed in venues across American including Carnegie Hall in New York City. Susan married while in the states and later became a US citizen in 1973.

In 2008, Susan moved from her home in Los Angeles, CA to Milton, FL. The neighborhood remembers her by her morning walks, followed by a neighborhood ride on her adult tricycle where she would sing to neighbors or ring her bell and say, "hello". She loved caring for her plants (many of which came from Los Angeles), watching and feeding the birds and fish at home, and rounding off the day with Korean television programs, Jeopardy, and Wheel of Fortune.

Susan Shim Hahn passed peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones and is survived by sister Tae Murdock (AKA Miami Sister), Daughters Elizabeth Hahn and Norma Beecham; Eight Grandchildren, Ten Great Grandkids, and Two Great-Great Grandchildren.

Susan will be buried in Los Angeles, CA and requested no funeral services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
