Steven Callaghan

August 17, 1960 — March 12, 2024

Steven Gregory Callaghan, a distinguished engineer and beloved member of the community, passed away on March 12, 2024, at the age of 63. Born in Santa Ana, California, Steve was the son of James Gregory Callaghan Jr. and Janice Veronica Callaghan (née Chounard), both of whom preceded him in death in March 2023 and March 2022 respectively.

Growing up in Garden Grove, Steve was an Eagle Scout.  He attended Garden Grove High School where his passion for music flourished.  He played the trombone with unmatched skill, earning numerous awards and recognition as the drum major. He carried this love for music into his college years, attending the University of Southern California, where he earned dual degrees in Biomedical and Electrical Engineering in 1983. Alongside his academic pursuits, Steve showcased his musical talent as a member of the USC marching band, even appearing in the iconic Fleetwood Mac music video for "Tusk."

Steve's professional career was marked by remarkable achievements and contributions. He was honored personally by President Bill Clinton for invaluable contributions to the GPS Program   and received The Joint Staff Certificate of Appreciation, earning him the moniker "Father of SAASM." Steve's groundbreaking work as an inventor and Chief Architect of SAASM Security Architecture revolutionized GPS technology, shaping the security systems of millions of military GPS receivers. His expertise extended across various roles, from Chief Systems Engineer to Integration Engineer, where he spearheaded efforts to modernize GPS capabilities for the warfighter.

Colleagues fondly remember Steve as a beacon of knowledge and kindness, always ready to offer guidance and support. His warm demeanor, wise insights, and infectious chuckle left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of working with him. Steve's dedication to his craft and selfless contributions to the GPS community earned him the admiration and respect of peers and leaders alike.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Steve found joy in creative endeavors and healthy living. Receiving his first camera at the age of five, he was an avid photographer with the beauty of outdoors being his favorite subject.  Following a life-altering heart attack in 2009, Steve embraced a healthier lifestyle and discovered a passion for knitting, a skill passed down from his mother. He generously shared his expertise by teaching knitting classes across Los Angeles and even authored a book on the subject.

In his spare time, Steve authored another book, "Making Caramel Candy for My Dad," reflecting his love for culinary arts and cherished memories with his family. His legacy of creativity, generosity, and perseverance will continue to inspire all who knew him.

A memorial service to celebrate Steve's life will be held at Forest Lawn in Cypress on March 30 at 11:00 AM, in the Hope Chapel. He is survived by his loving sister, Cynthia Callaghan, and a community of friends, colleagues, and admirers who will forever cherish his memory.
