Sing Lai Lou

November 1, 1926 — January 16, 2024

SING LAI LOU was born in the Sun Wei area of Canton, China. He was the third of three boys born to his parents Lou Yam and Lou Lum Tung.

Because his father was a citizen, Sing immigrated to the United States in January, 1941. His patriotism for his adopted country led to his enlistment in the United States Army during World War II.  He was later assigned to the United States Army Air Corps, 315th Bombardment Wing, stationed in Guam and Leyte, Philippines. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal.  After being honorably discharged, Sing continued his public service for this great country, working for the United States Postal Service from November,1951 until February, 1984, retiring with over 32 years of service.

Sing lived life to the fullest.  He inspired all those around him to have a deep respect for others, solid work ethic, and strong family values.  He was very active in the Los Angeles Chinese community.  He especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends, whether it was for association meetings, dim sum, dinners or banquets.  He loved to eat, with a penchant for sweets and cakes.  He was very fond of Chinese opera and gambling, especially horse racing.  He enjoyed traveling, visiting China, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Mexico, Canada, the states of Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Wisconsin, and many other places in California.  More recently, in recognition of his military service, he was honored to receive a Congressional Gold Medal and was chosen to ride on the American Heroes Rose Parade Float in January, 2020.

Sing is survived by Choy Yuen Lou, his bride of nearly 76 years; his children May (Son, previously departed) Dao, Sharon (Leslie) Tso, Robert (Candace) Lou, and Rita (Robert) Goulette; his grandchildren Laura (Vinh Vu) Dao, Catherine Dao, Christopher (Caitlin) Lou, and Caitlyn Lou; and many extended family members and friends.
