Life of Shu-Mei Kao Shiao
Ko, Shu Mei (nickname Mei Zhi), was born on January 6, 1944, in Zhunan, Miaoli County, Taiwan, Republic of China. Her father is Ko,Shunzheng and her mother is Ko, Shiao Yan. After graduating from Zhunan Elementary School, Junior High School, and High School, she furthered her studies at Taipei Teachers College in the Kindergarten Major. Later, she served as a teacher and principal at the private Renhe Kindergarten.
She and Mr. Shiao, Chun Jhy met because they almost collided while riding bicycles. The Ko and Shiao families lived in the same building. And because Chun Jhy often helped out at the kindergarten by carving printing steel plates, they both fell in love. After being engaged for 16 months, they fulfilled the wish of C.J.’s mother, to have her twin sons marry at the same date; they got married on May 10, 1969.
She gave birth to a daughter (named Yu-Bay) and two sons (named Ying-Kuang and Ying-San). After the Lunar New Year of 1986, on February 16, she and her three children immigrated to the United States. Her husband, Mr. Shiao, frequently traveled to and from the United States due to his engineering work and company, so Shu-Mei independently raised their children, encouraging their academic studies, and refining their characters. She once taught at the Ming Yuan Chinese School in Monterey Park and co-founded Wonderful Restaurant with her sister and brother-in-law. Afterward, she worked at Young’s Tea in San Gabriel until her retirement during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
After coming to the United States, she was converted to be a Christian at the Commission For Christ Foursquare Church led by Pastor Ken Hong. In 2005, she was baptized by his own son, Pastor Daniel Shiao, while he pastored at that church. She has since attended and participated in the churches and ministries at Pastor David Sun's Spring of Grace Church, Pastor Patrick Wei's Home of Grace Church, and currently at Pastor Ricky Poon's Spring Water of Joy Church. Over the years, she had been involved in various church ministries, including finance, hospitality, worship, and evangelism, assisting pastors in leading many seekers to faith in the Lord.
She often cared for and helped family relatives, shared generously, to the extent that she is admired, appreciated, and respected as a loving elder by everyone in the Ko family, her sister's Liu family, and her husband's Shiao family.
She suffered a stroke at home on May 14, 2025, and was urgently sent to the Monterey Park Garfield Hospital for treatment. During this time, many relatives and friends came to care for and accompany her, visit, and pray for her. Finally, at 12:10 PM on May 21, with her husband and three children by her side, she departed from this world of suffering and returned to her heavenly home, resting in the Lord's embrace. At the time of her passing, she left behind her children: Yu-Bay, Daniel, and Sam; daughter-in-law, Molly; and grandson, Isaiah. On June 14, at Forest Lawn, a Memorial service was held in the midst of relatives, friends, and church brothers and sisters, to say farewell to her. She now awaits the resurrection of in Christ, and the great reunion in eternity.
