SHIRLEY ANNE PIERCE

Shirley Anne Pierce was born on December 6, 1934, in Kingstree, South Carolina, to William and Alice Barwick, and passed away peacefully at home on April 11, 2026, after a life richly filled with family, faith, tradition, and love.

She grew up alongside her four siblings — Neiland, Harold, Curtis, and Francis — and was surrounded by the close-knit love and values that would shape the way she cared for others throughout her life. She now reunites with “her guys,” as she lovingly called them — her beloved husband, James Lawrence Pierce, and her sons, Jim and David Pierce — reunited once more in the love that always held them together.

Family was always at the center of Shirley’s life.

She shared 57 beautiful years with her sweetheart, James, lovingly known to so many simply as “Papa”. Together they built a life rooted in faith, family, and unconditional love. Together they raised four children — Jim, Sherry, Donna, and David — and created a home that became the center of countless memories for generations to come.

After settling in Long Beach, California, Shirley became the quiet heartbeat of her family. She had a way of making people feel cared for without ever needing recognition for it. Love simply lived naturally within her — in the scorching hot cups of coffee she enjoyed, the cards she carefully decorated by hand, the traditions she kept alive, and the comfort people felt just being near her.

She loved beauty in all its forms. Flowers blooming in the garden she could spend hours tending to. Birds chirping outside her window in the early morning. A thoughtfully decorated home during the holidays. A handwritten note. A museum filled with history and wonder. A bookstore aisle she could wander through for hours without ever growing tired.

Shirley also carried herself with timeless style and elegance. She loved accessories, stylish shoes, sunglasses, and the simple finishing touches that made an outfit feel complete. Her natural grace, paired with a few elegant pieces of jewelry, always pulled everything together effortlessly. Whether dressed up for church, the holidays, or simply heading out shopping, she had a natural eye for beauty and always brought warmth, sophistication, and elegance wherever she went.

Reading was one of Shirley’s greatest joys. She didn’t simply enjoy books — she disappeared into them. She could happily spend hours wandering through Barnes & Noble, reading passages, searching for stories, and leaving with far more books than she planned to buy. She loved writing too, filling journals and pages with thoughts, memories, reflections, and pieces of herself that her family will treasure forever.

And if shopping were considered a professional sport, Shirley may very well have been a Hall of Famer. She loved a good shopping trip and somehow always managed to find just the right touch, the perfect gift, or something beautiful to bring warmth into her home. Those who knew her often joked she could have easily been an interior decorator, with her natural eye for beauty and gift for making ordinary spaces feel welcoming and full of life.

For decades, Shirley dedicated herself to public service through her civilian work supporting both the United States Coast Guard and the Department of Defense. After 22 years with the Coast Guard, she continued her career as an Administrative Contracting Officer with the Defense Logistics Agency, supporting defense contract operations connected to Northrop Corporation in Southern California — a role she took great pride in throughout her career.

Her faith was the foundation of her life. Shirley loved her church deeply and found comfort and purpose in her relationship with God. She believed in prayer, kindness, family, and keeping traditions alive. Her life reflected those values daily — through quiet acts of care, thoughtful words, handwritten notes, and the countless ways she showed up for the people she loved.

She also loved to travel and see the world, but no matter where life took her, Shirley would always say she looked forward to coming back home. Home was her favorite place of all. She took immense pride  in creating spaces that felt warm, welcoming, and full of love. Every room carried her touch — thoughtful, comforting, and beautiful.

She found joy in simple pleasures — warm conversations, shopping trips, sharing a cup of coffee or a slice of pie, something sweet after dinner that she probably insisted she “didn’t need” while happily taking another bite anyway, and the everyday moments spent with the people she loved most. Shirley definitely had a sweet tooth, and those closest to her knew dessert was rarely optional.

And if any grandchild asked, you could often find her bravely climbing aboard the teacups, the log ride, the swings at an amusement park — and yes, even GhostRider at well over 80 years old, which still feels unbelievable to anyone who knew how wild that roller coaster really is. She showed up fully for the people she loved, never wanting to miss a moment, milestone, or memory — no matter how big or small.

Shirley treasured her family in ways both seen and unseen. She carefully tucked away birthday cards, handwritten notes, grandchildren artwork, and little keepsakes gifted to her and Papa over the years. She filled shelves with photo albums labeled by hand, preserving birthdays, holidays, graduations, vacations, and ordinary afternoons that became special simply because they were spent together. More often than not, Shirley was the one behind the camera — quietly capturing the people she loved so she could hold onto those memories forever.

To her family, Shirley was comfort and consistency. Wisdom and warmth. She was the person you called, the person you visited, the person whose presence alone could make everything feel steady.

Her love remained strong through every season of life. She loved with a tender heart and open arms.

In one of her journal entries written in 2018, Shirley reflected on the love story she shared with her husband:

“Jim was my first and only — and also my last.”

Those few words capture the kind of love Shirley believed in and lived out every day of her life — steadfast, enduring, selfless, and true.

Her family was her greatest treasure, and she poured herself into them wholeheartedly.

She will be remembered not only for the beauty she cultivated in her garden and home, but for the beauty she cultivated in the lives around her.

Shirley is survived by her daughters, Sherry and Donna; 15 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 25 great-great-grandchildren; extended family; lifelong friends; and countless loved ones whose lives were made brighter by her presence.

Though she is deeply missed, her family takes comfort in knowing that the love she gave so freely remains all around them: in blooming flowers, birds chirping in the morning, bookstore aisles, handwritten notes, cups of coffee shared together, slices of pie, holiday decorations carefully unpacked each season, butterflies dancing by in their bright orange dresses, homes filled with warmth and welcome,

And in the lasting example of a woman who loved her family with her whole heart.
