Shirley Jane (Rhodes) Holland, 87, of Seal Beach, CA went to be with the Lord on September 8, 2022. Born on September 25, 1934, in Newhall, CA, she was the eldest child of Cecil Ogden Rhodes and Frances Evelyn (Ross) Rhodes, a Mayflower descendent.
After graduating from Excelsior High School in 1952, Shirley attended Woodbury College in Los Angeles, CA. Soon after that, she met the love of her life, Charles LeRoy Holland. Charles and Shirley were married at The First Presbyterian Church in Norwalk, CA on October 2, 1954. They were blessed with a wonderful marriage of 64 years, and four children. As a wife and mother, Shirley dedicated her life to family and community. She became a leader in LCW (Lutheran Church Women) for St. John's Lutheran Churches in Norwalk and Cerritos, CA where she also taught children's Sunday School. She was an active member of the PTA for Norwalk and Bellflower School Districts in CA, and served as a leader for both Boy and Girl Scouts of America.
In 1967, Shirley chose to complete her educational degrees. While continuing to raise her children, she graduated with honors from Cerritos Junior College in Norwalk, CA. In 1974, she transferred to California State University Fullerton where she earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Graphic Design, graduating in 1979.
Shirley's talents as a graphic designer are evident in an oeuvre of work encompassing a notable agility in artistic and calligraphic expertise. Her passion for calligraphy and illustration, combined with a gift for teaching art, meant she not only instructed, but inspired her students. In 1990, Shirley began creating cards for the family and by the year 2000, she operated her own greeting card business. Shirley was an avid quilt maker and seamstress as well.
Shirley was devoted to the Lord Jesus Christ, her husband, family, and friends. She touched many lives and will truly be missed.
She is survived by: her children, Sheila Ruth Johnson of Norwalk, CA, Brian Scott Holland of Seal Beach, CA, Diane (Scott) Nyquist of Long Beach, CA, and Margaret (Robert Hornedo) Holland of Long Beach, CA; grandchildren, Ben (Abby), Mary (Erick Ayala), Joshua (Jessica) and Rebecca Johnson, Jonathan (Ellen) Holland, Ryan and Joel (Savannah) Noble, Nathan (Kelly) and Zachary Nyquist, and Emilie Hornedo; great grandchildren, Luke Johnson, Ethan, Hailie, and Emma Ayala, Liliana, Genesis, Winnie, Juniper, and Fathom Holland, and Soren Nyquist; sisters, Louise George, Patricia Ramsey, Nita Thomas, and Betty Beavers; brothers, Michael Ray Rhodes, and Bill (Robbie) Gleason; nephews, Alfred Francisco, Matt (Rebekah) and Kevin (Kate) Thomas, David (L. Roberts) Beavers, Douglas (Marie) Rhodes, Jonathan (Kathleen) and Daniel (Amy) Beeton, and Mark Andrew Holland; nieces, Kimberly (Sean) Coate, Rachel (Ryan) DeShong, and Erin (Josh) Orum, Julie (Mathew) Mick, and Renee (Christopher Labarthe) Holland; great nephews, Alex (Allison Hatley) and Josh (Amber) Francisco, Tommy Coate, Malakai and Indiana Thomas, Jake and Ben Orum, Noel, Braden and Avery Mick, Jack and Jordan Rhodes, and Jean-Paul Labarthe; great nieces, Bethany (Luke) Karcher, Bekah Francisco, Katelyn Coate, Addison, Emmaline, and Elle Thomas, Amy, Allison, and Aubrey DeShong, and Anja and Brynn Beeton; great-great nephew, Robin Augustine Francisco.
