Our beloved Shirley Ann Weldon Carter died on April 22, 2014, while surrounded by her beloved sons in Carson, California. She had been ill for an extended period of time.
Shirley was born on April 29, 1932, in Keokuk, Iowa. Attending public schools in Keokuk, including graduating from high school there, she also attended the University of Iowa.
In 1955 Shirley married LaVerne Carter and to that union four sons were born. Shirley took pride in being a wife and mother, and could frequently be found entertaining friends and family during dinner parties and social gatherings.
In 1976 Shirley and LaVerne relocated to Carson, California. Shirley was devoted to the Lord and His service. Baptized at an early age, she joined St. Martin's Episcopal Church. In the 1990s, she joined First Lutheran Church in Carson and loved her church family there. She joined the choir and attended Bible study regularly.
Shirley found employment in Carson at Home Savings and Loan and enjoyed a 20-year career at El Camino College, retiring in 2003.
Shirley could often be found discussing and analyzing the inner workings of politics with friends and family, a favorite pastime. Shirley also enjoyed attending plays and concerts. She appreciated all genres of music, but was especially fond of jazz and classical. An excellent writer, Shirley wrote many short stories and poems. She would often respond to editorials she read in various newspapers. Shirley was also an avid traveler, venturing to Israel, Egypt, the Caribbean, Greece, Turkey, Rome, Italy and Hawaii. Until her death, she loved interacting with people from all over the world.
An extremely generous and kind giver, Shirley remained a keen supporter of numerous charities, including her beloved church.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Horace Theopolis Weldon (and his wife, Charlotte Weldon), and her mother, Elizabeth Gladys Weldon (and her husband, Bill Salsbury). Shirley was also preceded in death by her husband, LaVerne, in 1991.
Shirley will be loved and missed by her beloved four sons, Craig (Carson, California), Mark, Neil and William (Minneapolis, Minnesota) and a host of family, friends and colleagues. She leaves behind a tremendous legacy that will be cherished and remembered by all.
