Shirley Jean Carrier

March 16, 1938 — July 6, 2019

Shirley Jean Carrier was born March 16, 1938 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Shirrell and Ovie Hodges. She was the youngest of three sisters, Ruby Elizabeth Boyd and Myrtle Pauline Rogers, both preceding her in death. Moving to Long Beach, Ca. during grade school in the 40's, she graduated from Jordan High in 1956. Marrying in 1961, she gave birth to a daughter, Julie Beth, in 1964. In 1970, Shirley began her career with the Long Beach Police Dept. that lasted for more than 32 years.
Cooking was her passion! She loved trying out new recipes for all her family and friends...making notes on many, spending hours at a time at grocery stores, hunting down her ingredients. Forever an excellent cook, she would receive requests when it came time for pot-lucks and other events. Reading non-fiction and attending movies, especially at the Art Theater in Long Beach, was something she enjoyed greatly. Her love of cats endured her entire life; always the "crazy cat lady" with one cat! Decorating her home and visiting antique stores were also favorite pastimes. Friendship played a large part in her life, as she was always caring and compassionate, offering good advise. In her later years, she took great pleasure watching her sole grandchild, Zach Elliott, grow into a young man. Being the Christian soul that she was through her walk with the Lord, she was ready and excited to meet her maker. She is dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
