Shirley M. Balin

Shirley M. Balin died peacefully in Rancho Mirage, Calif., on August 1, 2013, at age 89. Born August 28, 1923, to Rebecca & Abraham Silverman, she grew up in Chicago where she met Nate Balin at age 12, whom she married in Los Angeles (1944) while he was stationed at Oakland Naval Hospital. Shirley & Nate settled in Los Angeles where they lived until moving to Palm Desert over 20 years ago. In addition to raising their four children and being a homemaker, Shirley worked with Nate as his assistant during his career with New York Life. In their early years together, the couple enjoyed square-dancing and ballroom dancing. She enjoyed going to the movies, "date nights" with Nate, dining out with friends and attending "light opera" at the Music Center (LA) and the McCallum (Rancho Mirage). She enjoyed socializing with her friends and sharing activities together. She was a Life Member of several organizations, including the City of Hope. Shirley is survived by daughters, Paula Ann Davis of Los Angeles, Calif.; Cheryl Lynne Kelley (Ray) of Palm Springs, Calif.; and Marna Denise Hill (Richard) of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and was predeceased by her husband, Nathan (2011), and their son, Jeffrey Scott Balin (1992). She is also survived by her grandson, Greg Louis Davis; granddaughter, Amy McAvin (Mike); two great-granddaughters, Jordan and Kelsey McAvin; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 13, 2013, at 3:00pm in Ramon Chapel at Forest Lawn, 69855 East Ramon Road, Cathedral City, CA.
