Sharon Lee Haagsma was born on May 13, 1943 in Fullerton, California to Louis and Ruth Curti. She had two older siblings, Larry Curti and Marianne Tadema. She grew up in Hawaiian Gardens and graduated from Artesia High School in 1961. She was a majorette all four years and was head majorette her junior and senior year. She attended Long Beach State and also gave baton twirling lessons at the University of Redlands.
She met Dickie Haagsma at the Los Alamitos Racetrack in the spring of 1965. She found ways to be where he was and he was surprised she gave him a second look. They were married on October 1, 1966 in Bellflower. They lived in Anaheim for 2 years then moved to Corona for 12 years where they had many wonderful neighbors on Mulberry Lane who also became dear friends. Next they moved to the family dairy farm in Chino. Sharon was the bookkeeper and Dickie couldn't have run the business without her. She enjoyed walking the dairy alleys, having family gatherings and holidays plus caring for strays dogs that were often left at her doorstep. Commuting 2 days a week to L. Curti Truck and Equipment, she had opportunity to work with her sister, sister-in-law, brother and parents; there was no such thing as being with family too much! In 1980 she became pep squad advisor at Ontario Christian High School for 10 years. She was a role model in the lives of many baton twirlers, cheerleaders and drill team members. She was a member of Church on the Hill in Norco, serving as a Sunday school teacher and Coffee Break leader. She loved her church family and continued to keep up with them until the present. The annual vacation to La Jolla every summer since 1975 was the highlight for her family, and anyone who joined was always welcome to be part of the famous beach barbecue complete with s'mores.
In November of 2005, Sharon and Dick moved to Palm Desert into the home of her late parents. Sharon loved the desert- walking to El Paseo, working in their yard and being hospitable to whoever wanted to enjoy their lovely oasis. She attended Palm Desert Presbyterian Church and Community Bible Study. The ladies in her CBS became some of her most precious and dear encouragers in her 6.5 years of battling cancer.
Dick and Sharon have two children. Ruth-Ann Mouw married to Rocky. Richard Haagsma married to Kathleen. These four individuals meant the world to Sharon and she thought life couldn't get any better until the births of her 6 grandchildren Roxanne Mouw, Rocklen Mouw married to Katie, Raquelle Mouw, Ranger Mouw, Damon Haagsma and Dylan Haagsma. These truly were the lights of her life.
Sharon loved the Lord, loved to entertain people in her home, attend her grandkids' events, shop at Nordstrom, drink Pepsi with extra ice and eating popcorn, send encouraging notes and spread joy wherever she went. Kindness and compassion were her overarching qualities.
We will miss her but rejoice that she is now in the loving arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She loved her family and friends unconditionally-and was able to do so because of the love God had poured into her.
