Samuel Landau

January 3, 1935 — March 30, 2014

We regret to announce the death of Dr. Samuel Landau on Sunday, March 30, 2014 after a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. Sam was born in New York City on January 3, 1935 to Mabel Wild and Nathan Landau. He was a graduate of the Bronx High School of Science. An accomplished pianist, he was offered a scholarship to continue his musical studies but chose instead the scholarship to attend Cornell University from which he graduated in 1956. His medical degree was granted by Washington University in St Louis, Mo. in 1960. Dr. Landau went on to complete 5 years of post graduate training in internal medicine and cardiology and was a fellow at NY Hospital/Cornell. After his service in the military as a physician for the USAF stationed in Japan, he entered private practice in New Jersey. He moved to Palm Springs, Calif. where, until his retirement in 1996, he continued his medical practice. Not content with being idle, until 2013, Dr Landau was an expert witness for the Social Security Administration. His interests were varied; from his love of music to literature and was widely read in the arts, current events, history as well as in popular science. Sam was a long time member of Temple Isaiah in Palm Springs. Dr. Landau leaves behind his adoring wife, Ana Loaiza Burnett; his step daughter, Waleska
Coffman, whom he loved as his own child; his daughter, Lois Landau; son, Mark Landau, and granddaughter, Sonia Hitchcock. He had deep love for, and a caring relationship with his step grandchildren, Derek Coffman, wife Lauren Coffman and Ian Coffman. Sam also leaves behind his brother and sister in law, Dr. David Landau and Dr. Marcia Landau. Sam's first wife, Sondra Grant, predeceased him. Funeral services are private and in lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
