Ruth Josephine Berg Weir, 88, born on June 24, 1924, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2013, surrounded by two of her daughters and two of her granddaughters at her home in West Covina, CA. She was born in Chicago, IL, then moved to Momence, IL, where she graduated from St. Patrick's Academy in 1941. She came to California with her family in 1942 and married Patrick Weir. They moved to Alhambra, CA, in 1946 where they stayed and raised their family of 7 children. Ruth worked as an Executive Secretary for Vons Markets and retired in 1985.
Ruth and Pat moved to West Covina, CA, in 1975 and when Ruth retired she began working with the West Covina Seniors Helping Our Police (SHOP) program. She was active in the SHOP program for over 20 years. Ruth always loved the law. In fact, she wanted to be an attorney but her father would not allow that. In her career, she worked at both the Municipal Court and Police Department in Alhambra.
Ruth and Pat were part of the Founding Members of the USS Jenkins Reunion Group. Ruth served as secretary and newsletter editor for the group for many years and was inducted as an Honorary member of the USS Jenkins. She loved attending the reunions and often remarked that the the members were her like her family. Ruth was very patriotic and was thrilled when her son, Daniel, and her daughter, Theresa, joined the navy and her grand daughter, Melissa, joined the Air Force.
Ruth was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years and her son Daniel. She is survived by her children Madeline O'Brien, Kate Reed (Mike), Patrick Weir (Darlene), Deborah Weir (Richard), Theresa Powell (Carl), Tim Weir (Kathy), and daughter-in-law Sharon Weir; 16 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Visitation will be on Friday, March 22, 5:00-7:00 pm at Forest Lawn Covina Hills. Celebration of life services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 23 at Church of Our Heritage, Forest Lawn Covina Hills with burial immediately following. A reception will be held at the VFW Post 8620 in West Covina. Donations in Ruth's name may be made to the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 8620 in lieu of flowers.
