Ruth A. Schreckengast

May 21, 1926 — December 19, 2013

Ruth A. Schreckengast, 87, born on May 21, 1926, in Buffalo Prairie Township, Illinois, passed away December 19, 2013. She resided in Norwalk, California, at the time of her passing. Arrangements are under the direction of Forest Lawn, Cypress, California.
Ruth was the daughter to Ferdinand and Bernice Elliot. Ruth was one of five children, she was the second youngest. Ruth had three brothers: Nelson, Junior, and Richard and had one sister Billie. Ruth grew up on a farm with her family. Growing up you would find Ruth doing fun things such as roller skating, riding horses, hanging out with friends, and sharing in laughter. Family and friends meant the world to Ruth. Ruth went through some tough times in Illinois in her early twenties, however she did not let this stop her from living. Many people would agree that Ruth was one of the strongest people that they ever met, and she was able to consistently love, laugh, and bond with others.
When Ruth was in her late twenties she began to make a new life in California. However she would always call Illinois her home. When in California, Ruth went to Burbank to be with her sister Billie. In Burbank, Ruth worked at JC Penny. On Saturday nights Ruth and friend Virginia went to the Hollywood Platinum to dance to the big band music. There she met her future husband Gonah.
Ruth and Gonah made their home in Bellflower, California. Two years later their daughter Cindy was born. Ruth joined Eastern Star. There she met many lifelong friends. As a family, Ruth, Gonah, and Cindy enjoyed many family nights at Eastern Star. This organization was very important to Ruth.
Ruth was also a grandmother to Jason, Harmony, and Justin. Grandma Ruth was not only a grandmother to her three grandchildren but would adopt and welcome in all of Jason, Harmony, and Justin's friends. They all referred to her as Grandma Ruth. Grandma always put others first. She loved Disneyland, Bingo, shopping, laughter, baking, neighbors, family, and family gatherings. Ruth would always strike up a conversation with a smile on her face. Ruth brought joy to people, whether it was sharing in a good laugh, a good story, or sharing home baked goodies. Ruth has made each and everyone of us a better person and has taught us so many lifelong lessons. Ruth has been described as: strong, compassionate, loving, caring, charming, life of the party, delightful, sweet, bubbly, kind, thoughtful, wonderful cook, silly, and giggly. Daughter Cindy always described her mother as, "Mom is just a party waiting to happen!" We all know that Heaven just got a little sillier!!!:)
Ruth is survived by: husband, Gonah; daughter, Cindy; son-in-law, Jim; grandchildren, Jason, Harmony, and Justin.
