Ruby May Bothwell

Ruby was born on May 28, 1920, to Kansas transplants Ralph and Sadie Schmidt. After attending Woodrow Wilson High School and Long Beach City College, Ruby attended the University of California, Berkeley, and graduated in 1944. After returning to Long Beach, Ruby dropped by the Pacific Coast Club with a friend in October 1945 and there happened to meet a young army captain who had initially gotten the attention of her friend. A golf date the next day led, four months later, to her marriage to Douglas William Bothwell on February 16, 1946.

Ruby and Doug would be happily married until his death on May 27, 1994. Ruby raised their four children, taught in the Long Beach Unified School District and, later, had a very successful career in real estate. She was also active in the Rick Rackers and Assistance League. People who met Ruby were invariably taken by her warm and outgoing personality.

Ruby is preceded in death by her husband and a grandson, Barrett Scott Dickie, and is survived by four children, Sally Ann Bothwell LeCroy (Billy), Douglas Ralph Bothwell, Bruce Edward Bothwell (Claire), and Nancy Jane Bothwell. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Jennifer Brooke Korkos (Dionisios), William Fisk Douglas Bothwell II, Sarah Mackenzie Long, Katrina Jane Bothwell, Jillian Louise Bothwell, Jackson Barrett Long, and four great granddaughters.

A memorial service will be held on August 14, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn Long Beach.
