Ruben Mortera, affectionately known as "Papa Ruben" to his beloved family, passed away peacefully at home on June 27, 2025, at the age of 85. Born in Bangar La Union, Philippines, on December 19, 1939, he dedicated his life to both his career and family, leaving behind a legacy of love and commitment.
Ruben worked in the Philippine Government under the Department of Trade and Industry for 27 years before migrating to the United States in 1989. After arriving in his new home, he pursued a career in the healthcare profession, ultimately establishing his own healthcare facility as an Administrator. His educational background included a degree in Business Administration from the University of the East, which served him well in his various roles throughout his career.
Known for his kind, caring, and humorous nature, Ruben was a light in the lives of those he encountered. He was always enthusiastic and sensitive, making everyone feel welcome. Throughout his life, he cherished spending time with family, often in the kitchen where he was famous for his delicious and savory "giniling" (ground beef with potatoes), a dish that brought joy to his sons and grandchildren alike.
Beyond cooking, Ruben had a variety of interests that showcased his vibrant personality. He was an avid chess player, proudly collecting several chess sets, and enjoyed playing mahjong with his youngest brother Pete and sister-in-law Lilia. His love for gardening was evident in his flourishing garden, where he grew a variety of orchids, fruits, and vegetables, sharing the bounty with his loved ones.
As a father, Ruben's devotion to family was demonstrated when he had a basketball court built in their front yard in the Phillipines to support his sons' passion for the game. He also enjoyed playing table tennis with his sons. He was deeply proud of his accomplishments, particularly as a grandfather. He made it a priority to attend grandkids' school activities and witness their milestones, including the graduation of his older grandchildren from college.
Ruben is survived by his loving wife, Lily, as well as his sons Alan and Be, and daughters-in-law Rochelle and Irene. He was a proud grandfather to Raiven, Christian, Gigi, Jacob, and Rheana. Additionally, he leaves behind his brother Pete Mortera and sister-in-law Lilia Hernandez-Mortera, along with his nieces Helen Li Mitchell and Sophie Mortera.
He was predeceased by his father Telesforo Mortera, mother Victoriana Mortera, brother Liberato Mortera II, and sister Estrella Mortera-Milano.
The visitation for Ruben Mortera will be held on July 7, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Forest Lawn - Cypress - Hope Chapel in Cypress, California. A funeral service will follow on July 8, 2025, Holy Mass at 10:00 AM at St. Pius V Catholic Church in Buena Park, California, concluding at Forest Lawn in Cypress California.
