Dr. Ruben A. Abunto, Jr., a compassionate physician, devoted husband, and beloved mentor, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at the age of 55.
Born on December 20, 1970, in Legazpi City, Albay, Philippines, Ruben was the cherished son of the late Ruben Abunto, M.D., and the late Mercedes A. Abunto, M.D. He was the youngest of three siblings, with older sisters Maria Teresa Abunto, M.D., and Maria Vanessa Abunto, M.D.
A lifelong dedication to healing shaped Ruben’s medical career. After earning his medical degree from the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center in 1997, he devoted 25 years to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). He began as an internal medicine resident, then practiced Internal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine before establishing the Hospitalist Program at UPMC Mercy Hospital. A gifted educator and mentor, he inspired generations of physicians through his knowledge, example, and commitment to patient care.
Colleagues admired Ruben for his gentle demeanor, cheerful disposition, and unshakable calm. He approached every day with a smile, treated others with kindness, and made even the most demanding workdays feel easier. His humility and generosity touched everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Above all, Ruben treasured his wife of 25 years, Maria Rosario B. Aguiluz-Abunto, M.D., the love of his life. They met in medical school, where a shared love of coffee sparked a lasting bond. He expressed his devotion through thoughtful gifts, home-cooked meals, and travels around the world, giving his wife a lifetime of cherished memories and unconditional love.
Ruben leaves behind a legacy of compassionate service, quiet strength, and selfless devotion. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and the countless lives he touched. His example reminds us that the greatest measure of a life is not only what we accomplish, but the kindness we extend to others.
