Roy Durand, 72, born on February 14, 1941, in Surabaya, Indonesia passed away February 17, 2013. He resided in Rancho Cucamonga, California at the time of his passing.
"Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, we would walk side by side through life. But when I needed you most, I saw only one set of footprints in the sand. The Lord replied, 'I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.'"- Footprints in the Sand
In Loving Memory of Roy Durand...
Roy's main passion in life was music - singing and playing, whenever possible. In his early years, he was a member of The Tropic Rollers band in Den Helder, Holland. He continued to play popular music with his family and friends for high school dances when the family relocated to the United States, but found his passion for the Steel Guitar in the early 80s while his love for country music bloomed. He soon followed the path set by his father, Jean, and began the long and love-filled journey to Hawaiian music. He played music with multiple halau's (hula schools) for luaus, shows and competitions - and for a little while, he was even dancing with the Kane (men), he joined bands, like Something Simple, who brought many people to their feet for nights filled with fun and dancing and he played at multiple Steel Guitar conventions in Hawaii.
His smile and Aloha spirit was contagious; wherever he went, Roy was sure to leave with a new friend. Kind, generous, loyal and compassionate - those are only a few words that can be used to describe his personality. While on his travels, locally and to his beloved Hawaii and Thailand, he made many friends in multiple communities. Recently, he started learning to speak Thai and was getting to know and love the culture - especially the food!
Roy was surrounded by love, family and friends in life and in the moments before we lost him. Thank you to everyone who knew him and loved him, to those of you who were touched by his many gifts, to those of you who helped him smile when he was down and to those who hold fond memories of days gone by. We will miss our beloved father, brother and friend - he will truly be missed...but he will always be loved.
