Roy Chan at the age of 94, passed away peacefully with family at his side on January 28, 2023, at the Rose Valley Assisted Living Facility, his home since Oct 2021. He will be remembered as a hard worker and family man, who was quietly industrious, reliable, trustworthy, and conscientious.
He was born in Los Angeles, #4 in a family of 7 children, to Sik Cheung and Lily Chan. He enlisted in the Army during the Korean War, and with help from the GI Bill, he earned his degree in Architectural Engineering at Cal Poly University San Luis Obispo in 1953. He married Daisy Yee in 1957, and together they raised their family of 4 in Alhambra. Roy was co-owner of Chan & Yee Engineering, and his construction work, from home remodels to restaurant building, became known within the Chinese community in the greater LA area. He continued his involvement in the church at True Light (formerly known as Chinese Presbyterian) and San Gabriel Presbyterian, consulting/overseeing numerous construction projects. He was an active member with Chien Hua, and was recently awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
With Daisy's passing in November, 2022, and despite his diminished cognition/memory, he missed her and soon joined her in heaven. He is survived by his sisters Dorothy Au and Dora Wong; his four children Jamie Chan, Garry (Marsha) Chan, Tammy (Tom) Chew, and Steven (Shirley) Chan; 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his brother David Chan, and sisters Lillian Gee, Jean Chew, and Ellen Chiu.
A private graveside service for the family will be held at Forest Lawn Glendale. A Celebration of Life Service for both Roy and Daisy, will be held at Evergreen Baptist Church of San Gabriel Valley, 323 Workman Mill Road, La Puente, CA on February 25, 2023 at 10:30am.
