ROSE (Sarközi) LEDER passed away on May 22, 2015 at the age of 83.
Rose was born January 25, 1932 in Grodnau Austria, the fourth of five siblings of the late Michael and Rosina (Kozak) Sarközi. Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to so many died peacefully surrounded by family at her Valley Village, CA home.
Seeking a better life than what post-war Europe had to offer, with $5.00 in her pocket and all of her worldly belongings neatly packed in a cardboard suitcase, she bravely embarked on her first journey and emigrated from Austria to Canada in 1953. Ten years later, Rose finally settled in Southern California.
Always a strong, independent woman with great self-determination, Rose took her position as family matriarch seriously. She dedicated her life to ensuring that her family and loved ones always came first and foremost. To Rose, a sound unyielding family structure was sacred, being one of the most important things one can possess and rooted in that foundation influenced who we become. Rose always loved and cherished the ones in her life. She provided the parent's requisite unconditional love, forgiveness as needed, understanding, compassion and the wisdom she acquired throughout the years of hard knocks. She dispensed both unsolicited and valued opinions and of course copious amounts of epicurean meals.
Any kitchen was her favorite domain and that is where she flourished. Cooking, especially Old World specialties, was always her passion. Even though she accumulated volumes of cook books over the years, she without fail applied her own spin and culinary know how to the gastronomic delights she prepared. Upon becoming an empty nester, she eventually realized a lifelong goal of putting her culinary skills to good use by opening two successful related businesses; a diner and a deli.
Rose was also an avid and enthusiastic world traveler, having contracted a severe case of wanderlust early on. She was particularly delighted in being able to take several month long trips to Europe with her two sons and being able to show them the wonders of the Old World. There were also numerous enjoyable cruises with friends into Mexican and Alaskan waters. She was always ready to pack her bags and go on adventurous and exciting excursions to the unknown, often going off the beaten track. Some of her most memorable trips were to Asia, where she climbed The Great Wall in China, sampled street vendor food in Bangkok and driven by curiosity, broke away from the guided tour to visit the Macau Palace (Floating Casino).
Rose was always very active in the Austrian and German communities in the Los Angeles area, being a longtime member of both the Austrian American Club and the Los Angeles Soccer Club. She was on the Board at the LASC for several years and was particularly proud when they elected her to serve as their first woman president. Also one of her favorite pastimes was playing cards with the girls every Tuesday at the Mayflower Club.
She is survived by her sons Rudy Leder of Valley Village, CA and Harold Leder and his wife April of North Hollywood, CA; grandchildren, Rudy M.R. Leder of Brooklyn, NY, Kristin D. Stone of Dallas, TX, Tanya M. Scott of Simi Valley, CA, great grandchildren, Grayson, Alexandra and Dalton Stone of Dallas, TX; sister Franzi Seebacher, nieces Christine Weber, Silvia Fürnhammer and Gitti Ecker of Vienna, Austria.
Rose was preceded in death by her older siblings, Michael Sarközi, Mitzi Graf and Robert Sarközi.

Memories take us back to the best of times
With those who mean the most.

Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there; I did not die.

Psalm 23
Der HERR ist mein Hirte; mir wird nichts mangeln.
Er weidet mich auf grüner Aue und führet mich zum frischen Wasser.
Er erquicket meine Seele; er führet mich auf rechter StraÃe um seines Namens willen.
Und ob ich schon wanderte im finstern Tal, fürchte ich kein Unglück;
