Ronald G. Knapp, 96, born on September 5, 1917 in Merrill, IA, passed away July 21, 2014.
He resided in a Residential Board and Care Home in Cathedral City, CA at the time of his passing.
Growing up as an only child on a farm in Iowa taught Ron the value of hard,
honest work and simultaneously left him with a great disdain for dirt. He
sought a change of scenery and moved out West to Los Angeles, where he
graduated Magna Cum Laude from Woodbury College. He met his wife Jean at a
beach party on a blind date arranged by his cousin. He served in the US Coast
Guard during World War II.
Ron's incredible work ethic and business acumen served him well in a career as
a corporate man. He was an accountant and worked for several companies
including Standard Packaging, Good Humor Ice Cream, and Collins Foods International.
Away from work, Ron was a loving husband, a devoted father of two daughters
and later a grandfather and great-grandfather. Vacations with family to Palm
Springs and the beach were bi-annual events
Ron was fun-loving and adventurous and enjoyed traveling the world with Jean
before and after retirement. He enjoyed dancing to Big Band music, and was an
avid golfer. During his retirement in Palm Desert he was a constant presence in
social groups and could often be found pouring over a crossword puzzle,
engaged in a game of bridge, playing a round of golf or sneaking in a nap. Ron
always kept an inscrutable scoresheet during bridge, and even if he dozed off
during a few rounds, he still somehow managed to win the game!
Ron and Jean eventually moved to the Carlotta, a retirement community in Palm
Desert at the age of 85. The social nature of the community suited Ron
perfectly and he always made time to say a friendly hello or tell a joke to all of
the residents and staff. If Ron was late to a meal, it was because he had to stop
and chat with everyone he passed along the way.
Those who knew Ron will always remember and miss his devotion to his family
and friends, his integrity, his zest for life and most of all his keen sense of
humor. Those who knew him will never forget the sound of him shuffling down
the hall. Ron is survived by Jean, his wife of 71 years, his two daughters-- Barbara Cherry
and husband, Ken, of Eagle, Idaho; Janet Polder and husband Dan of Oceanside, CA ;
granddaughter Krista Chaison and her husband, Aaron and two great-granddaughters
Hailey and Juliet
We love you and miss you and know you are at Peace!!
