Obituary

Ron Balaban, a man whose warmth and generosity left a lasting impression on all who knew him,  passed away peacefully on the morning of March 20th. He lived a full meaningful life defined by service, humor, and deep personal connections.

Ron was often described as someone who never met a stranger. His infectious, lighthearted personality was evident to anyone fortunate enough to spend time with him. In his presence, one always felt seen. He had a remarkable way of making each person feel like the most important individual in the room.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Ron was the devoted son of his mother, Ella, who doted on him throughout his childhood. He fondly shared stories of her love and spirited nature, including a memorable moment when she loudly scolded him across the city of New York after he spent a fortune (twenty-five cents) taking a date for a soda and to the movies.

At the age of 16, Ron moved to Fitchburg, Massachusetts, where he attended Fitchburg High School. There, he excelled in athletics, particularly football and track. In his senior year, he was proud to be part of the school's 4x100 relay team that won the New England state championship.

After graduating, Ron answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Navy. He served with distinction during the Korean War as a radioman aboard the USS Helena. While on shore leave in Long Beach, CA he met Jean Wooldridge, the woman who would become his beloved wife of 44 years.

Together, Ron and Jean built a life in Norwalk, CA, where they raised their two children, Craig and Cheryl. Ron dedicated 40 years of his professional life to working as a butcher and managing the meat department for Safeway and later Vons. Even in retirement, he remained active and engaged, taking on roles as a school crossing guard and a metro rail security officer. He often joked that he may have been the only security officer to ever have his own vehicle stolen from the lot he was assigned to guard!

After his second retirement and following Jean's passing, Ron was fortunate to find companionship again with Margaret Alford. The two shared many happy years together after relocating to Murrieta, CA, where they enjoyed life in their new community, The Colony.

Following Margaret's passing, Ron was once again blessed with love when he met Phyllis Penn. Their relationship was filled with joy and adventure, from lively bridge and poker games at The Colony to memorable travels around the world.

Ron considered himself truly blessed to have lived a long and fulfilling life and to have been surrounded by so many wonderful people who loved him deeply.

He is survived by his loving children, Craig, Cheryl; his son-in-law Steve; his grandchildren, Brad (Christina), Joe (Nicky), and Ryan; and his great-grandchildren, Matthew, Emma, Ella, Rebecca and RJ, along with countless other family members and dear friends.

Ron's legacy of kindness, humor, and genuine connection will be cherished and remembered always.

Arrangements are under the care of Forest Lawn, Cypress, CA.
