Roland Charles Kercherval, age 89, of Compton, CA, and formally of Edgemont, SD, transitioned into eternity on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at his home.
Born in Custer County, SD, Roland was the oldest among three siblings to the late Beatrice Katherine and Roland Samuel Kercherval, Sr. His upbringing was centered on a ranch close to Dewey, SD. He pursued his education at Dewey and Edgemont Public Schools, culminating in his graduation in 1953 from Edgemont High School. Known as "The Mogul," during his time there, Roland was engaged in various school endeavors. He excelled in football and took part in many school activities, such as E-Club, Glee Club, Mixed Chorus, and Boys Quartet, and even ventured into acting roles in school plays.
In December 1955, Roland joined the United States Navy, taking on the role of a fireman-marine stationed aboard the U.S.S. Helena. He completed two terms of service and continued as part of the Naval Reserve until December 6th, 1961. Roland was a Long Beach Fleet Service Department mechanic following his naval career. Before this, he had gained experience working with the Ford Off-Road Racing team and the Pan-American Trucking Company, where he initially embarked on his professional journey. Apart from his professional pursuits, Roland had a deep passion for country Western music. He often showcased his exceptional guitar-playing skills and delighted his family and friends with his amazing musical talents. In 2015, Roland embraced his Christian faith, undergoing baptism and becoming a member of the fellowship at City Church of Compton, CA.
Surviving Roland is his caring sister, Mary L. Kercherval Short from Cincinnati, OH, along with cousins Beatrice Jones and Patricia Jackson. To further cherish his memory and continue his legacy are his daughter Veronica Denise Kercherval, his seven grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
Roland is preceded in death by his wife, Jannie Kercherval, his son Roland Kercherval Jr, & his brother Robert Kercherval.
As we commemorate Roland, let's recount these memories embodying his essence. In his honor, let's exemplify kindness towards each other, reflecting his spirit. The legacy of love and compassion that Roland leaves behind will reverberate within our hearts.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
