Roberto Castañeda Ochoa, affectionately known as Rey, was a man whose life was defined by strength, loyalty, and an unwavering love for his family. Born on March 10, 1930, in Durango, Mexico, Roberto dedicated his life to nurturing the values he held dear. On August 7, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family, he peacefully passed away in Verdugo Hills, California.
Roberto’s journey was one of resilience and steadfast dedication to his loved ones. His career was never about personal accolades but about building a foundation for a better life for his family. He shared a deep bond with his beloved wife, Alicia Ochoa, who departed this world too soon but was forever present in his heart. As Roberto transitioned to the next chapter, her spirit was with him, guiding him with the love they shared.
To his family, Roberto was more than a provider—he was a masterful cook who used food as a language of love and connection. In the kitchen, he didn’t just pass down recipes; he passed down traditions and the importance of family bonds. Whether it was teaching the art of cooking a perfect prime rib or cherishing handwritten notes of affection, Roberto’s legacy is deeply rooted in the values he instilled in those he loved.
Roberto was also fondly remembered for his love of music, the joy he found in dancing with Alicia, and his unwavering dedication to his family. His hobbies, from reading La Opinión to embracing new experiences with an open heart, painted a picture of a man who lived fully and loved deeply. Whether he was fixing things around the house, savoring a sunset at the beach with his loved ones, or embarking on new adventures, Roberto’s presence was a source of warmth and joy. He was a man who never said no; he always said, “Let’s do it.”
Roberto’s memory is cherished by his two surviving brothers, Salvador and Melchor, and their families; his children: Maria, Sylvia, Gerardo, Robert and his wife Patty; his grandchildren: Gabriel, Jasmine and her fiancé Shaun, Brandon and his wife Brittany, Ellias and his wife Illiana; his great-grandchildren: Aubrynn, Braden, and Rafi; and also by his extended family and friends. Together, they carry forward his teachings of hard work, love, and perseverance, embodying the best parts of his spirit in their daily lives.
For Roberto, his greatest accomplishments were not measured in personal achievements but in the success and happiness of his family. His unwavering belief in moving forward and embracing one’s heritage shaped the way he lived, always honoring the wishes of his mother when he came to the United States to build a new life.
