Roberta Ho Urbien

April 4, 1937 — December 16, 2024

Roberta Urbien, 87, born on April 04, 1937, in Honolulu, HI, passed away December 16, 2024.

Roberta graduated from Roosevelt High School in Honolulu, Hi in 1955. She went on to graduate from the University of Hawaii in 1959 with a BS in Institutional Management. She then embarked on a long career as a Registered Dietitian, starting with a residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1960. She went on to work at California Hospital for nearly 40 years, rising from Clinical Dietitian to Head Dietitian. She met her husband, Alfredo Urbien, working at the hospital. They were married in 1961 and had two children together, a daughter, Delphine, and a son, Darrell. Delphine worked through high school alongside her parents at the Hospital, and the Urbien family were fixtures at Hospital functions throughout the 1970s and 1980s, until Alfredo's death in 1982. With Delphine a successful Stage Manager at Disneyland and Darrell working at Orange Coast College, Roberta rose all the way to Director of Food and Nutrition Services. Roberta left the Hospital in the late 1990s but maintained her membership in the American Dietetic Association for nearly 60 years. She chose to remain in public service at the East San Gabriel Valley Regional Occupational Program, helping others to find work. She endured more heartbreak with the loss of Delphine in 2000. Roberta finally retired in 2004. She continued to enjoy travel, food, gardening, her (adopted) pets, and of course her beloved Los Angeles Kings.

A long time resident of Los Angeles, CA, Roberta was staying in Costa Mesa, CA with her son, Darrell at the time of her passing. She was predeceased by her husband Alfredo and daughter Delphine; her parents Thomas and Helen Ho; her older brother Robert Ho; older sister Esther Lee; and younger brother Roland Ho. She is survived by her son, Darrell; Ben and Nita Urbien and their family; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
