Robert William Rongey

March 9, 1936 — September 21, 2018

Robert Rongey was born 3/6/39 in St. Louis Missouri. He was close with his three siblings, Frank, Fernetta and Patricia. Robert's eternal optimism, intellect and perseverance led him out of DeKalb, Illinois, where he was raised, and into the US Navy. In the Navy, he was recognized early for his leadership and coolness under pressure. After an honorable discharge, he used the GI Bill to earn a bachelor's of science degree from the University of Southern Illinois. Robert then proceeded to work in some of the best research labs in the country.

It was at the University of Southern California, where he was appointed as the director of the electron microscopy lab, that he met the love of his life, Madeleine. Robert and Madeleine were married in 1974 and he was quickly embraced by her parents and was a devoted son-in-law. He gave up his promising research career to support his new family and was a phenomenal father, husband and son-in-law. He was a romantic husband who would often send love notes to his wife. He supported his wife's career as she was the first female engineer her company hired. He was a wonderful cook and prepared all the meals for family celebrations. He in turn taught his daughters how to cook, especially steaks. He became a fierce defender of his daughters' scientific aspirations. He inspired his two daughters, Cathy and Christine, to become doctors. He supported his daughters in all their endeavors- sports, career and personal life. He encouraged them to be more bold and chase their dreams.

He was a beloved neighbor who would greet anyone with a smile and a friendly hello while walking one of his rescued golden retrievers. He adored children and was a Sunday School teacher. He served his community and donated several gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. In short, he was loved by all who met him and there is no doubt that because he lived, he left this world a better place. He will be missed by his wife, Madeleine, his daughters Cathy and Christine, his son-in-law August and his grand children, Jack Robert and Luciana Ani.
