Robert Zarate Rivera

June 21, 1972 — February 9, 2021

Robert Zarate Rivera, 48, passed away on February 9, 2021 due to complications of Covid-19. He was born in Glendale, CA to Albino and Pura Rivera, the second of two sons named after two prominent Kennedy brothers, John and Robert. Shortly after, the family moved to a brand-new, family-friendly development on a hilltop in Highland Park. The Riveras were instrumental in forming a tight-knit community and frequently hosted neighborhood gatherings and parties, and of course there was always music. Having grown up together in this idyllic setting, Robert formed lasting friendships with his diverse neighbors.

He attended elementary school at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and School where his mother taught. He then went to Luther Burbank Junior High School and later Benjamin Franklin High School, graduating in 1990. He attended the University of California at Santa Barbara and Pasadena City College and majored in business.

Although, he was quiet and soft-spoken, Robert was an integral member of a 20+ group of friends, self-named, "The Gang," an 80's spin on "Our Gang" who spent their time hanging out at school, the Glendale Galleria, and often Robert's house, with summer trips to Magic Mountain and the beach. Robert was infamous for his uplifting personality, rad DJ skills, and his rust-colored van. What he valued most was family which included his friends. He literally was always willing to go the extra mile to drive home a stranded friend or meet them for a late-night dinner to talk about their problems. Whatever you needed – big or small – Robert was there.

Throughout his life, Robert had a keen interest in and passion for music. Early on, he learned how to play the piano and quickly became proficient. He started breakdancing in junior high school and then deejaying in high school. This ultimately led to a career at Odyssey Innovative Designs. His friends and co-workers at Odyssey said: "Robert showcased a passion for vinyl records and the growth of the DJ movement, moonlighting as a mobile DJ playing weddings and events. In 2000, he joined Odyssey as an operations generalist. There, he was able to find a professional career that aligned with his love for the DJ community. Between sales, product management, supply chain and customer success, Robert found a home for the next two decades. Over time, he became a staple at Odyssey." He loved being in the music industry, learning about new artists, seeing music trends change and helping others in their music careers. What Robert loved most about deejaying wasn't just the music, but that he felt it brought people together and made people happy.

Friends and family loved Robert for his kindness, humor and generosity. He always greeted people with a smile and a laugh. He loved spoiling his nephew and cousins with collectible items, Star Wars toys, and good luck $2 bills. This made Christmases, birthdays, and graduations especially joyous.

He is preceded in death by his parents and older brother. Robert is survived by his beloved nephew, John Avery Miles Rivera, and sister-in-law, Maria Rivera.
