Robert "Bob" Doty Nellis, for 66 years the loving husband of Joan Hoyle Nellis, passed away on June 18, 2020 at the age of 90. Bob lived a life of service to his country and community. He was born on November 9, 1929 in Glendale, California, attended Glendale schools, including Glendale High School and Glendale College, before enlisting in the Navy as a naval aviator during the Korean War where he flew the first jets off aircraft carriers. Upon his return, he married Joan Hoyle on December 19, 1953, and began a family and a career working at the Campus Cleaners, a business he and Joan took over and successfully owned and operated from 1972 until their retirement. As an active Boy Scout, he earned his Eagle, became a scoutmaster for his son Bobby's troop, served in the Verdugo Hills Council as district commissioner and President, and earned many awards, including the Silver Beaver, which honored his service to scouting. Hejoined DeMolay as a young man, then became a Mason and a Shriner. As a businessman, he joined Rotary and served as President of the Glendale chapter. Healso served as President of the Glendale Quarterback Club and of the board of Unity Church of the Valley. He is predeceased by his parents Albert and Doris Nellis, hisin-laws Arthur and Annie Hoyle, and his son Robert Arthur "Bobby" Nellis. He is survived by his wife Joan; daughters Sue Nellis and husband Mark Gorton (of Sacramento),Debbie and husband Bob Koach (of Montrose), and Julie Nellis (of Bishop);grandchildren Whitney Gorton Clark and husband Woody Clark (of Chicago), Jared Gorton and partner Kathleen Buckingham (of Sacramento), Nikole Koach and partner Cruz Molina (of Olympia, Washington), Clayton Koach (of Montrose), and AJ Doegris (of Bishop); and great-grandchildren Fera and Greta Koach Molina (of Olympia). Bob was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and will be missed for his sense of humor and devotion to his familyâhe was truly one of the nice guys of the world. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills in the Church of the Hills at 12:30 p.m. Donations in his memory may be made to the Verdugo Hills Council, Boy Scouts of America and to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
