Plaistow, NH: Lt. Commander Robert G. Bennett, U.S. Navy Ret., 84, a resident of Plaistow since 1991, died Friday, December 12, 2014 in Dover, NH.
Born in Methuen, son of the late Raymond and Dorothy Bennett, he attended local schools and graduated from Purdue University.
Lt. Commander Bennett joined the U.S. Navy in 1950 and retired in 1975, after twenty-five years of service. He was stationed all over the world during his career and served as a submariner aboard the U.S.S. Jallao, as well as service aboard the U.S.S Bordelon, the U.S.S. Brush, the U.S.S. Decatuer, the U.S.S Joseph P. Kennedy, JR. and the U.S.S. Newport News. Among his numerous awards and medals are the Navy Occupation Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the China Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with 2 Stars, The Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the Nation Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. After his retirement from the Navy, he was employed as a teacher in the Andover School System.
Devoted to his grandchildren, he enjoyed discussing politics, traveling in his R.V. across the United States, and working with machines and home repairs.
He is survived by his wife of twenty-three years, Ruth "Shirley" (Smith) (Briggs) Bennett, three step sons, David Briggs and his wife Lee of Barnstead, NH, Steven Briggs and his wife Destiny of New Durham, NH, and Robert Briggs and his wife Cynthia of Rochester, NH, four grandchildren, Dawn Corriveau, Robert Briggs, Daniel Briggs, and Kate Briggs, four great grandchildren, Jonathan, Sarah, Maggie, and Jake, and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Lt. Commander Bennett's Life Celebration on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main Street, Route 121A, Plaistow, NH. His funeral service with Military Honors will take place on Wednesday, December 17 at 10:00 AM in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 166 S.
