RICHARD DEAN WINELAND MD passed away peacefully at home with his wife by his side June 22nd after his struggle with cancer. Most knew him best as "Doc".
A long term resident of the Burbank area, Doc was born June 14, 1931 to Dr. Albert J and Margaret E. Wineland of Los Angeles
and attended Mersersburg Academy in Mersersburg, Penn. He continued his education at USC, Irvine , where he affiliated with the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He then earned his medical degree in 1962 and interned at Burbank Community Hospital. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Los Angeles County General Hospital in 1965 and earned board certification in 1969.
Doc began his career at East LA Community Hospital, joined Burbank Community Hospital staff (Thompson Memorial) in 1969 where he was Head of the OB/ GYN department until closing and maintained staff privileges at St. Joseph Providence Medical Center of Burbank until retiring in 2005. Throughout his career, Doc was proud to note delivering over 5,000 babies with a low overall 18% c-section rate.
In June of 1953, Richard married Rosemary Anglin of Indiana and had 4 children, Thomas Bradford 1954, (wife Janet Miller ) Robert Bruce 1956, (wife Kim Sorsby) Jennifer Clair 1958 (husband Dan Dougherty) and J'Amy Beth 1960 (husband Russ Babb) . They divorced in 1971. Richard later married Rosemarie Rice of Los Angeles, his long time companion.
Doc is survived by his widow Rosemarie and his 4 children, 4 step children, 13 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren , 10 step grandchildren, 2 step great grandchildren and sisters Roberta and Carolyn Wineland.
Among his many accomplishments, Doc was a member of Sky Roamers of Burbank, completed his first solo flight in 1971 and continued his joy of flying. He was a member of the LA County Medical Assoc., American Medical Assoc., Burbank Health Care Foundation for medical assistance programs and the Burbank Men's Golf Association.
Doc had many hobbies and stressed to his family the importance of utilizing their creativities. He Introduced the love of boating and camping at Lake Mojave to his family where they enjoyed making memories ,entertained family and friends with his home made fireworks singing with his ukulele, hours creating his special five armed gift candles, incubating chickens, spent hours on the sewing machine embroidering gifts, reloading his own ammunition for elk and deer hunting and experimented with the culinary arts of making strawberry and peach jams, attempted glass and metal engraving. Doc even carted clay back from Bob's mine at the family claim in Nevada for pottery creations. There are bits of his handiworks throughout the homes of his family and friends keeping his memory alive. The majority of his spare time, however, was on the golf course with his wife. Doc was well known at Debell Golf course in Burbank, where he proudly boasted two hole-in-ones. He was also a member of Ironwood Country Club in Palm Desert, where he spent countless weekends playing golf and participating in golf tournaments, specifically the Member-Guest with his sons. One of his most memorable Member-Guest tournaments, however was the Hook A Rama in Salt Lake City with His son in-law Russ.
Doc had much to be proud of, but mostly praised his four biggest accomplishments, his children. He deeply loved his wife and family, whom he worried and cared for up until his passing. We will miss you so much Dad, Mi Amore, Ricardo, Doc, G-Doc, Grampa Doc, Pop, Pops,Poppa,Poppy,Dick and Richy.
Funeral services will be under the direction of Forest Lawn Los Angeles (Griffith Park) with the Reverand Ross Purdy presiding.
