STEINER, RICHARD LEE
Dick Steiner, 91, formerly of West Milton, Ohio, passed away on December 1st, 2016, while in hospice in Palm Springs, California, his home since 1980. He was born Richard Lee Steiner on February 12th, 1925, in Laura, Ohio, to Walter J. and Helen Herkins Steiner.
He graduated Milton-Union High School in 1943, joined the U.S. Navy during WWII serving in the South Pacific, then earned a B.A. degree from Miami University in 1949.
Dick was best known in Miami County, Ohio, as Manager and Executive VP of Steiner's Sand & Gravel Co and Ready-Mix, Inc., from 1950-1967. He served on the Milton-Union school board during that period, was active in the Lions Club, American Legion, Masonic Lodge and sang in the choir as a devout member of the West Milton United Church of Christ. He then left the family business to pursue a ten-year career with the school district, first as a teacher, then as its first business manager to his retirement.
Described as a "Wonderful Husband" Richard is missed and survived by his wife and best friend of 70 years, Wilda. In Palm Springs they were employed on the estate of Darryl Zanuck and later Dick managed security at the Walter Annenberg "Sunnylands" estate in Rancho Mirage. In retirement he was a seasonal handyman when home, as they enjoyed traveling the U.S. and Canada in their camper in the summer months and taking cruises abroad.
He leaves behind his son Brent Steiner of Los Angeles; daughter Pamela (Steiner) Anderson of Ft. Mill, SC; son Kenneth Steiner of San Diego; daughter Colette (Steiner) Shelley of Mansfield, TX; six nieces, two nephews, eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are his sister Sonia (Steiner) Phillips of La Crosse, WI, and his sister-in-law Ruth Hurley of West Milton. Local cousins include Pat (Herkins) Holsapple of West Milton, Joanne (Herkins) Robinson of Marysville and Bill Herkins of Tipp City.
He was preceded in death by his sisters Isis (Steiner) Dillon, Marilyn (Steiner) Bechtol, Esther (Steiner) Gade, brother Douglas W. Steiner, brothers-in-law Russ Bechtol, Russell Dillon and Wayne Hurley, many cousins including Robert Herkins, and nephew Andrew Dillon.
