Richard Gaid Manginsay

October 4, 1971 — August 13, 2015

Richard (Ricky, Toto or Chard) Gaid Manginsay was born October 4, 1971 in Cagayan de Oro and was raised in Bacolod, Lanao Del Norte, Philippines. He passed away far too soon from cancer, but peacefully in his newlywed's arms in their home in Calabasas, California on August 13, 2015 at the age 43.
Richard's desire to be an artist began at an early age, with encouragement from his mother and being surrounded by artistic members of the family. After graduating from La Salle Academy in Iligan City, he attended college at MAPUA, where he landed his first job at the Philippines based Fil-Cartoons. There, his obsession grew into a lifelong passion. While working at Fil-cartoons, Richard worked on shows such as THE REN & STIMPY SHOW, TINY TOON ADVENTURES and DEXTER'S LABORATORY, etc. Soon enough, Richard was noticed by Fox Animation Studios and was offered a job in Phoenix, Arizona in 1996. His work can be seen in such features such as ANASTASIA, TITAN A.E. and BARTOK THE MAGNIFICENT. He later relocated to Glendale, California, where he honed his skills at DreamWorks Animation and spent years animating for Film Roman's FUTURAMA, KING OF THE HILL and finally the show that he became synonymous with, THE SIMPSONS. He left for a brief stint for FAMILY GUY, but quickly returned to THE SIMPSONS, where he spent the rest of his career, doing character layouts and rising to the rank of Assistant Director. His team received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Animated Program in 2012.
Richard's dedication to his craft was unparalleled. Even in his downtime, he always carried a black Sharpie and was constantly drawing on napkins, tablecloths or whatever materials were available to him. He was often the first to be in the office, last to leave and long hours on the weekends were normal for him as he didn't consider it work. His only complaint was that one particular office wouldn't allow him inside before 6am and kicked him out at 7pm. Visitors to Los Angeles knew of the three must-see attractions in the city; Disneyland, The Hollywood Sign and Richard's now infamous tour of Starz Plaza, where THE SIMPSONS is created. Guests always left with a smile and a keepsake drawing of Bart.
A pillar of the Filipino Community, Richard was as dedicated to his family and friends as he was his work. Always with an easy smile and mischievous twinkle in his eye, he inspired and mentored those around him to be the best version of themselves that they could be, to achieve their dreams, to encourage artistic endeavors in children, follow the heart and to find the humor in all things while remaining humble.
Richard is survived by his wife, Jennifer N Manginsay, his son, Wes Nathan Manginsay and her children, Jenneil, Joaquin and Gabrielle, father, Rufino Manginsay, brothers Maurelio, Ronnie and Rey, sisters Rosemarie and Rosebeth as well as countless friends whom considered him family and millions of fans around the globe whom never knew him but have been touched by his desire to make the world smile.
He is predeceased by his mother, Monica Manginsay.
