Richard Althoff, affectionately known as John, departed this world on May 25, 2025, in Cathedral City, California. Born on February 20, 1943, in Illinois, Richard lived a life rich with purpose, kindness, and warmth. He embraced every moment, creating lasting memories that echoed in the hearts of those fortunate enough to know him.
Richard's career was marked by his role as a Senior Subdivision Title Officer and his service as a Notary Public, but his greatest joy came from assisting seniors in the Coachella Valley as an Ombudsman. He dedicated himself to serving others, a testament to his loving and caring nature. A friend to many, he never wanted the party to end, often surrounded by family and friends, each gathering infused with laughter and joy.
A man of diverse talents, Richard was not only a world traveler who reveled in discovering new cultures, but also an amazing chef, bringing people together around tables brimming with love, laughter, and delicious food. His gentle heart continued to inspire those around him, nurturing kindness and compassion in all aspects of his life.
Richard’s journey through life was not without sacrifice; he served in the U.S. Army with honor, exemplifying his commitment to his country. As he transitioned into higher realms, his passing was peaceful, after visits with cherished friends, and under the incredible care of Hospice, allowing him to depart this world with grace and dignity.
Richard leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion through his remaining family: his stepson, Charles M. Bergschneider Jr., along with his stepchildren, William C. Bergschneider and Carla Polkinhorn. He is survived by his brothers, Kenneth, Robert, and Patrick Althoff, and his sisters, Carol Vadney, Ginger Faulkner, Phyllis Foley, and Teresa Williams.
He joins in eternal rest with those who predeceased him, including his beloved spouse, Charles M. Bergschneider, and his parents, Robert and Helen Althoff. He is also reunited with his brothers, David, Wayne, and Dennis Althoff, and his sister, Doris Langston – a family constellation now brightened by his presence.
