Ray Procopy Moscal

February 10, 1933 — January 19, 2016

Ray Procopy Moscal, 82, was born on February 10, 1933, in Lanao, Philippines. The son of a Russian father and Scottish-Filipino mother, Ray spent his childhood in the mountains and jungles of the Philippines where he learned to hunt, fish and tend to the family farm and plantation. He survived the Japanese invasion of the Philippines during World War II. Ray's family played a pivotal role supporting the local U.S. and Filipino military resistance by providing comfort, supplies and even military intelligence against the Japanese occupiers. Following the war, he went on to graduate from the Cebu Institute of Technology in 1956 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Working as the chief electrical engineer for a local mining operation, Ray was severely injured by an exploding electrical transformer and eventually hospitalized. It is here that he met Luzviminda (Luz) Amelo, his attending nurse who would turn out to be the love of his life and the woman who would later become his wife.

Ray and Luz immigrated to the U.S. in 1962 and settled in the quiet suburbs of the San Gabriel Valley just east of Los Angeles. They eventually purchased a home in Rowland Heights, CA where they raised their two sons. He spent most of his professional career working for the city of Los Angeles as an electrical engineer helping to design and build a number of notable power generation facilities both within and outside the greater Los Angeles area.

Ray was an avid outdoorsman who loved to camp, hunt and fish with his family and especially his nephews who joined him on a number of backpacking trips in the Sierra Nevada's. His love for farming also lead him to establish a small apple orchard in the Kern River valley area of Lake Isabella which he managed with the help of friends and family. Ray also loved to travel whenever possible, returning to his native Philippines on several occasions as well as taking a memorable trip to the Ukraine to visit the birthplace of his father.

Ray passed away on January 19, 2016 at Kaiser Permanente in Baldwin Park, CA due to complications related to a long battle with Parkinson's disease. He died peacefully surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife Luzviminda, his sons Mark and Lee, his daughters-in-law Mariela and Clara and by his grandchildren Amanda and Aidan.

Ray also leaves behind his brother Jack and sisters Vera, Mary and Diana.

He will always be remembered for his witty sense of humor, his knack for storytelling and the unconditional love for his friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, his family is kindly requesting donations to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (www.michaeljfox.org)
