With profound sorrow and enduring love, we announce the passing of Rafael “Ray” Maestro Jr., a devoted son, loyal friend, and compassionate soul, on April 10, 2025, at the age of 66.
Ray was born on August 11, 1958, in Trenton, Michigan, the only child of Rafael “Ralph” Maestro and Lillian Maestro-Fleming. He was raised in Long Beach, California, where he attended Horseman Elementary, St. Matthew School, Jefferson Junior High, and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1976. A talented athlete, Ray played Little League and Pony League baseball at Stearns Park and proudly represented his high school on the Wilson baseball team.
A dedicated professional, Ray spent his adult life as a craftsman in local major oil refineries and was a respected member of UA Local 250 and Softball Teams. He was known for his strong work ethic, unwavering reliability, and good-natured personality.
He had a deep love for the Los Angeles Kings and was an avid fan throughout his life. He also had a passion for big game fishing. In later years, Ray made his home aboard a small boat at the Port of Los Angeles Marina, a peaceful retreat he shared with his three beloved cats, White Paws, Vučko, and Buster.
Ray’s greatest passion was animal rescue—especially birds. He volunteered countless hours with the Los Angeles Wildlife Center, a local bird sanctuary group, giving generously of his time and heart to care for and protect wildlife. Though he never married or had children, Ray created a legacy of kindness, dedication, and compassion.
He is survived by his dearest friend Mitch Prather and family, along with many cherished friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rafael “Ralph” Maestro and Lillian Maestro-Fleming.
Ray lived a humble, purposeful life, rich in friendship and compassion. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him—friends, neighbors, fellow animal advocates, and more.
