Poi Chau

Poi In Chau was born in Taishan, a province in Guangdong, China in 1929. She was the oldest child of Thomas Fong and Mei Yuk Yee, and sibling to brothers Dan, David, Wing, and sister Paula. Poi passed in 2025 at the age of 96. She was married to Check Nin (also known as Bob) in 1950. A year after the birth of daughter Marian, Bob left Poi and baby, traveled to America to seek a better life for his family. Son Dominic was born shortly after. It would be 14 years later before Bob was able to send for his family to unite in America. Together Poi and Bob worked hard to provide for their family, operated a family restaurant until retirement in their 60s. Poi and Bob traveled the world after retirement, active in Family Associations in Los Angeles Chinatown. Bob passed in 2014. Poi continued to reside in their Los Angeles home on her own with help from caregivers. She was vibrant, sharp, and spirited before succumbing to cancer symptoms in the last 6 weeks of her life. Poi is survived by her daughter Marian and son-in-law Stephen, son Dominic and daughter-in-law Karen; grandchildren William, Nathan, Stephanie and Kimberly; great-grandchildren Dylan, Addison, Jackie, Chloe, Abigail and Hudson. We miss her dearly and forever remember her loving smile.
