Phyllis Arlene Bethel

May 27, 1931 — July 22, 2018

Our dear mother, Phyllis Arlene Bethel, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2018, with her two daughters at her side. Phyllis is survived by her two daughters, Beverly and Diane. She was a very proud Nana to her two granddaughters, Barbie and Haley. Her husband, Donald, passed away in 1974 and her middle child, Barbara, passed away in 1979.
Phyllis was born May 27, 1931, in Burlington, Iowa to Earl and Edith Smith. She was the third child with two older brothers, Jay and Dell, and their younger sister Evelyn. Donald and Phyllis were married in 1952 and shortly thereafter headed to Guam where Donald served in the Navy. Upon returning to the states, they settled and built their first and only family home in Glendale. Busy raising their three daughters, Phyllis was also active as a PTA President and Girl Scout Leader. Once the girls were older, Phyllis spent her time working at Ivers Department Store in La Canada as their bookkeeper. After the department store closed their doors, she started a new chapter working for Bronson Health Products. It was there that she was able to display her great knowledge of vitamins and holistic living. Because she so deeply loved being with people and keeping herself busy, she stayed working until she was 77 years young! She was definitely a people person and she loved to tell stories and laugh! She loved to cook and tend to her garden and read mystery novels. But no one could deny that she had a passion for shopping! Her favoriite place to relax and be with her family was in Cambria, California on Moonstone Beach. There wasn't a moonstone she didn't love.
God Bless you Mom!
