Cape Coral, Florida: Philip N. Burns, 78, a retired Haverhill Massachusetts Police Officer, and resident of Cape Coral since 1995, died December 21, 2014 in Ft. Myers.
Born in Georgetown, MA, son of the late Lloyd and Doris (Snay) Burns, he was raised and educated first in Georgetown and later Haverhill, graduating from the former Haverhill Trade School. He later received his degree in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University. Mr. Burns served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman from 1954 until 1958 and later joined the Haverhill Police Department retiring as a patrolman in 1994 after eighteen years of service. He was a former recipient of the Haverhill Exchange Club Police Officer of the Year Award.
A member of Saint Andrew's Parish of Cape Coral and target shooting clubs in Cape Coral and Ft. Myers, he also enjoyed ice fishing, hunting, country music and taking cruises with his wife Betty.
Survivors include his wife of twenty-five years, Elizabeth (Zangari) Burns, a son and daughter-in-law, Philip A. and Maureen Burns of Haverhill, two daughters and a son-in-law, Lynn A. Burns of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Crystal L. and Chester Firek of Haverhill, two step-sons, Horace Privitera of Westford, MA and Wayne Privitera of Haverhill, two sisters, Lois Bacheller, and Judith Elia, both of Florida, seven grandchildren, Meghan, Gino, Derek, Jake, Sean, Trevor, and Connor and a great grand-daughter Giada, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister Charlotte Finigian.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Life Celebration on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Plaistow, NH. His funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 9a.m. from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10a.m. in All Saints Church, 120 Bellevue Avenue, Haverhill ,MA.
