Peter Joseph Cheoros

Retired Lynwood Unified School District educator Peter Cheoros passed away Sunday morning, January 7th at the Lakewood Regional Medical Center from complications of pneumonia. Though he had been in declining health in recent years, Peter celebrated his 76th birthday in mid-December.

He was born in Chicago, Illinois. As a toddler, Peter moved with his family to Long Beach, California where he would spend almost all of his life.

Peter earned his undergraduate degree in history from California State University, Long Beach and received his graduate degree in psychology from the University of La Verne. In addition to being a history teacher for 42 years at Lynwood High School, Peter was also an archaeologist, academic, researcher, scholar, and collaborator on publications.

In his career, he worked on a number of programs for the State of California and the United States government. Some of these included writing the National History Standards for World History; site visitor for the National Blue Ribbon School program; eight years as a member of the Curriculum Committee of the NCSS; California K-8 Textbook Selection Committee; CSET standards commission; CBEST consultant; and consultant for the ETS Advanced Placement History Examination. Peter wrote curriculum for the National Trust, United States Department of the Interior, and the NEH. He worked for the California Credentials Commission accrediting university teacher credential programs.

He had various hobbies and interests. Travelling with Edith was number one. Though Peter combined travel and archeology too as both of them worked at excavation sites near Ancient Corinth in Greece and elsewhere. This is how they spent much of their married life together when outside of the United States in Greece and many other countries.

He dearly loved books: mysteries, any history books, and tomes about archeology; plus more genres though he was not one for typical novels. Peter enjoyed stamp collecting, coins and even comic books when he was a young teenager. Also Peter liked sports; including Angels baseball and anybody who was beating the Dodgers!

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Virginia Cheoros of Long Beach. Peter is survived by his bride of 52 1/2 years, Edith, who was also an elementary school teacher in Lynwood before she retired from the classroom. He is also survived by family members in Greece, Cyprus and the United States, by many friends, and by former colleagues.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations please be made to The Cheoros Foundation Isthmia Excavations / Edith Cheoros. The Isthmia archeological site is located at the Isthmus near Ancient Corinth in Greece.
