Obituary

Peter Chi Wang Au passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 1st, at the age of 91, surrounded by the love of his family at his home in El Monte, California.

Born on July 14, 1934, in Canton (Guangzhou), China, Peter’s life embodied perseverance, humility, and heart. Though he left school after the sixth grade, his enduring curiosity, determination, and tireless work ethic carried him successfully through every stage of his life.

Peter was an artist, builder, tinkerer, gardener, observer, listener, and adventurer. Never one to shy away from a challenge, he ran marathons, completed lifeguard training in his youth, managed a mitten factory and restaurants, and mastered Mahjong. At home, he made every gesture reflect his deep love of family — offering late-night back scratches, blow-drying wet hair to ward off colds, and playing “daddy turtle” at the beach. In retirement, he and Sylvia traveled the world, riding helicopters to Alaska’s glaciers and snorkeling its icy waters, ziplining above Old Town Montreal, and racing go-karts in California.

Peter is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sylvia of El Monte, CA; children Sheila (John) Wong of San Diego, CA, Chad (Connie) Au of Kirkland, WA, Melissa (Bill) Au Bengele of South Jordan, UT, Diana (Jamaal) Moore of Oakland, CA, and Donna (John) Fioroni of Medford, MA; and grandchildren Alicia, Elisa, Victoria, Theodore, and Josiah.

He was preceded in death by his parents Chil Jab Au and Sung Hing Ho, his sister In Chan Au, and his twin brother Chi Kwong Au.

A celebration of Peter’s life will be held Sunday, March 29th, at 10:00 a.m. at Forest Lawn Covina Hills, prior to cremation and his return to Hawaiʻi for his final resting place at Valley of the Temples. A service will be held there on Thursday, April 23rd, at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, bring a memory to write or share in his honor.

志宏先生身後留有相濡以沫四十三年的妻子Sylvia(現居加州艾爾蒙地市);子女: Sheila (丈夫John Wong,現居加州聖地牙哥)、Chad(妻子Connie,現居華盛頓州柯克蘭市)、Melissa(丈夫Bill Bengale,現居猶他州南喬丹市)、Diana(丈夫Jamaal Moore,現居加州奧克蘭)及Donna(丈夫John Fioroni,現居麻薩諸塞州梅德福市);孫兒女:Alicia、Elisa、Victoria、Theodore及Josiah。
