Born in Long Beach, California, to Alvin and Vio Benson, Paul grew up with his twin brother Philip and sister Judith. From a young age, he showed a strong dedication and clarity of purpose. His educational journey began at Long Beach Polytechnic High School, continued at University of California, Los Angeles, and culminated at California State College, Long Beach, where he ultimately earned a master’s degree in mechanical engineering.
Paul's heart was captured by Carol Delpit, whom he married on September 8, 1956. Together, they created a nurturing home for their children, James, Laurie, and Marie. He was also a loving grandfather to Rebecca and Matthew.
Paul's distinguished career in aerospace engineering culminated at Boeing, where he took on the role of head structural engineer for the Orbiter on the Space Shuttle program. His significant contributions to this field, most notably in spacecraft design, have left a lasting imprint. His passionate commitment and deep expertise are evident in this enduring legacy.
Retirement allowed Paul to fully embrace his role in community service. He was not only a key figure and board member of the H.O.P.E charity at St. Irenaeus Church but also a dedicated volunteer at the L.A. Catholic Worker Hospitality Kitchen, investing years and untold hours in helping others.
Paul’s passion for the outdoors was unmistakable – from exhilarating skiing and camping trips at Mammoth Mountain to adventurous hikes in Yosemite, and bicycle rides to the beach, embracing the fresh sea air.
