Patricia Riley Temple

November 24, 1927 — April 22, 2014

Patricia Riley Temple passed away on April 22, 2014 in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Pat was born, raised and educated in Los Angeles, Calif. She graduated from Los Angeles Polytechnic High School where she met her husband, Herb Temple. They were married in 1949 in Santa Monica, Calif. They lived in many places in furtherance of Herb's military and civilian careers. Pat enjoyed these adventures. She worked at MGM Studios as Secretary and Assistant to many of the great writers and directors of the time. At MGM she met Rod Serling who was emerging as one of the outstanding young writers for both motion pictures and television. She resigned her MGM position and became Serling's personal secretary. These were exciting times as the Twilight Zone series and other highly acclaimed productions were being developed by Rod Serling. Because of Herb's relocations, Pat left Serling's employment and settled into the role of Army wife. Their many years in Washington, D.C. and the attendant world travels were a memorable part of her life and brought friends from around the world. Herb retired from the U. S. Army as a Lieutenant General. One of Herb's positions was on the staff of Governor Ronald Reagan. While in Sacramento, Pat took time to graduate with honors from American River College. Pat and Herb retired in Washington, D.C., and subsequently moved to their retirement home at the Palm Valley Country Club in 1996. They were dog lovers and during the course of their lives together had two Miniature Dachshunds (Ilsa and Elke) and while living in Palm Desert acquired their beloved Petey, a dog of many breeds, from a pet rescue. Pat was an ardent pro and college football fan. USC was a favorite, she and Herb were raised in the shadow of the campus. Her pro favorite was determined by the QB she most admired at the time. Recently, Major General David Baldwin, Adjutant General of the California National Guard declared Pat Temple to be the First Lady of the California National Guard. The Riverside County Board of Supervisors adjourned their meeting on April 22, 2014 in honor of Patricia Temple. A Funeral Service in her honor will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at 9:00 am in the Ramon Chapel, at Forest Lawn, Cathedral City. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Animal Samaritans of the Desert, PO Box 513, Thousand Palms, CA 92276. Forest Lawn Cathedral City is in charge of arrangements.
