Nubia M. Petrie

July 22, 1933 — January 3, 2016

Born on July 22, 1933, in Managua, Nicaragua, Nubia M. Petrie lost her short (9 days in the hospital), but brave battle on January 3, 2016 after suffering a stroke on December 26, 2015. MRI results showed that she had had many mild seizures and mild strokes while sleeping for awhile prior to being admitted in ER on December 26, 2015. These prior instances, however, had somehow "self resolved," ultimately deteriorating brain tissue in the process. While in the hospital, a CT scan identified a blood clot in her brain which was successfully removed. Although the procedure was successful and no subsequent brain hemorrhaging was found, she did not regain full consciousness after the surgery.

She was surrounded by her loved ones at the time of her passing at St. Joseph's Providence Hospital in Burbank, California on Sunday, January 3, 2016 at 1:34 pm.

Nubia Petrie came from very humble beginnings and graduated from a private university in Managua, Nicaragua before immigrating to the United States. Rising quickly up the corporate ladder of financial institutions in Los Angeles, Nubia left the corporate world to start her own successful chain of mobile food catering truck operations in Northern and Southern California long before it was considered a trend. "Nubia's Catering Service," ran successfully for many years within beach locations (Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro) and local adult schools (Belmont in Los Angeles) before Nubia decided to retire.

An avid traveler, Nubia Petrie accompanied her daughter all over the world including destinations such as China, Egypt, Europe and together they also did a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

Tireless, strong and determined, Nubia Petrie dedicated most of her retirement to being an animal advocate.

An advanced, compassionate and caring individual, Nubia Petrie was instrumental in the development, founding and ongoing operations of Ken-Mar Rescue, a 501c3, non-profit, small dog rescue, that her daughter, Martie Petrie, co-founded with Ken Guild in 2007.

Nubia Petrie's legacy lives on at KenMarRescue.org through her daughter who carries the tradition of high-quality, rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming service to orphaned small dogs in our community and all over the greater Los Angeles area. To date, Ken-Mar Rescue has saved close to 700 lives.

Nubia Petrie is survived by her daughter, Martie Petrie, who lives in Los Angeles, California.

In addition to her daughter, Nubia Petrie leaves behind a sister, Alicia, niece, Roxana, and two nephews, Norman and Mario. She will be missed not only by her family and friends, but by the entire community, who benefitted from her kindness and generosity.
